What does "fried steak" taste like?
Like fried hamburgers? Cheese steaks?

How does it taste different from grilled?

Just some thoughts prompted by the Harkin steak fry...

1. It is an acquired taste.
It is really cube steak breaded and fried like fried chicken and served with gravy. When I moved south it took me 6 or 7 years to try it and sadly, once I did I started to like it.

I was just wondering about whatever they had at the Harkin meet.

It struck me that I'd had fried beef in various forms before, but anything that could be called "steak" I'd only had grilled, and wondered what the difference was.

I'm aware of "chicken fried steak", but this NY yankee's never had it before.

14. SADLY???
Depending on who makes it and what kind of steak you use, it's fantastic!! Oh my god, at Chili's they have the best...it's got this thick batter, it's golden brown and ittastes fantastic with mashed potatoes and white gravy on everything. If you grew up here, there's nothing like chicken fried steak, and I even know a few imports from the NE that love it. It's fabulous.

4. Been wondering about the "steak fry".
Is it really a "fry"?
Or do they grill them?
Was anybody there who can answer?

6. It is a secret
You must attend Harkin's steak fry to learn the truth.

See you at the next one.

7. Well you take tough cube steak
and you pound the bejabers out of it. Coat it with flour, salt and pepper and fry it in oil.

When you have finished you have neither the meat flavor of steak nor the tenderness of pot roast. But you have the calories of the fatty steak without the healthy vegetables you would have with a pot roast.

I grew up on this stuff and it's yuck!

8. Tastes like tingling in your left arm and neck...
...followed by an extreme crushing sensation in your chest.

Followed by permanent unconsciousness.

9. Sorry you all are so culturally deprived....
While I haven't had chicken fried steak in a while, it is neither greasy nor tasteless when properly prepared.

That said, I have no idea what Iowans mean when they say a "steak fry". However, since they're normal people, I would assume its quite tasty. Why else would they gather to eat it?

15. Fried steak....not chicken fFry?
So you're not talking about CHICKEN FRIED STEAK. Ok...Fried steak doesn't sound weird. We've had oven fried steak a lot. I can imagine it's just put in a frying pan and cooked...I don't know, but it doesn't sound much different than oven fried...it's good. Come on...it's steak...if you just cook it with salt and pepper and have a little BBQ sauce available, its never bad...unless it's tough...that's why I only eat sirloin. Its rarely tough if cooked properly.
