Food safety and cooking info

I have avoided posting info about my site here, but I just finished an article on food safety, stocking up for disasters like Isabel, and some recipes that can be made from shelf-stable foods with no cooking. I think this information is important for everybody; it's not a 'survivalist' mentality. Hope all of you in the path of this storm stay safe.

5. I might be wrong, but.....

Don't some gas stoves have electric ignition or electric cutoffs?

I might be wrong, but it seemed like I heard people with gas stoves sometimes couldn't use them when power went down.

6. Ah yes

If you have an electronic ignition instead of a pilot light, you're right, you're out of luck. The electronic thingie saves power, but the pilot light lets you cook when there isn't any power.

But you can still light it with a match, since the gas comes out no matter what! :-)

BTW, this reminded me of the last stove I had. It was a really old 40s range and I had to light the burners every time as well as the oven. The oven would make this horrible "whoosh" sound when you lit it and sometimes flames shot out of the side vents. What fun that was!

8. This may not be true of your oven(s)

WHile we can certainly light our stove-top burners with
a match, the gas valves for the oven are also electric
and won't open unless the electric igniters get really
hot AND the power is still on.
