DAMMIT! x(

aw well. he is a young guy (24) and was only there for 3 weeks. i didn't particularly like him (had a 'gutter mouth' in front of women etc...) but the kid got axed and took it really hard.

he just didn't have an 'office demenor' if you follow.

but, it forced me to monitor the building all day and make sure he didn't try and get back in (i'm their WEBMASTER BTW). the ladies in the front office were scared and the HR person who fired him was a bit shaken.

anyway, he deserved it but was never really warned to 'tone it down'. he should have known better but he isn't the only one who steps over the line (mortgage bankers).

insult to injury, we are in a 'unique' location being that there is a martini bar on the 4th floor and the employees pretty much take it over on thursday nights. he got drunk with the rest of them last week and stepped over the line trying to fit in i guess (NO i was NOT up there) :P

anyways, lots of tension at work today and i'm feeling kinda bad about his termination (not sure why).

sooooooooooooooo

i'm drinking. whose with me?

1. Three weeks...no warning?
No class.

Yeah, he should have known better, but...

2. that's too bad.
He should've been warned before being fired. I've managed a lot of people, and some, especially young men, need some guidance in how to behave in an office. They're not all bad people - just immature and unknowledgeable.

3. I don't care how bad an employee is, warn 'em before you
fire 'em. Unless they're stealing from the company, of course.

8. "After Hours" Sheesh, it IS a "buyer's market" on Labour...
Had a section chief that would tag along with us after work (why, I have NO ideas. She was "Hell on Wheels" at work and we didn't like her)
anyway, one night she tried to tell me what to do at the bar, and it wasn't sexual in nature, so I said "Look-I clocked out 2 hours ago. I'm on *MY* time now, you can go piss up a rope."

Everyone laughed so hard she never tagged along again...

5. Now that sucks
however, I am sure Bill Clinton had something to do with it.

I'm always up to having a drink or two or several or too much.

9. To over 35 years of watching unjust firings in the workplace . . . .
and sometimes being unjustly fired myself . . .

In an employ-at-will country with union busting laws, not a darn thing we can do about it (most of the time).

Anyone here ever walked off a job because of an unjust firing, just as a matter of principle? I can't remember ever doing it, although I wish I could say I had. Don't give up on me yet, I'm thinking, 35 years in the workplace is a long time . . . . surely, at least once, I had that kind of gumption . . .

12. Hey Honey
There you are. I didn't see this thread before I posted about opening the bar to celebrate the CA recall decision. I'm sorry about your bad day. I can relate, a co-worker of mine was fired a few years back. Didn't fit into the "environment" and I wasn't surprised to see him go, but a little saddened just the same. Sometimes, it takes people a little longer to get used to corporate life. And he certainly should have been put on some kind of improvement plan unless he out and out harrassed someone or threatened someone.

13. Sorry about this, matcom. Office politics and a management slip-up...
Unless the offense is *way* out of line (tapping the till, etc.) or dangerous to other employees, the guy should have been talked to first.

I work for a big university, and when an employee goes astray, they get "interviewed" and documented. After that, another infraction means getting canned.

I totally understand that sick, ambivalent feeling you get when your employer (to whom you have an allegiance of sorts), acts hard-hearted and really brings the hammer down. Something akin to a big family fight.

It is unsettling, so I'll buy you one -- :toast:

Hang in there--

14. This is why I don't drink with co-workers
Man, I can't tell you the number of drunken happy hours I attended back at my contracting days at a major pharmaceutical company. And believe me, that stuff comes back to haunt you. I've always managed to control myself (hey drinking & driving NOT a good thing), but some of the new hires out of college didn't realize this was a weekend frat party.

I was never one for company social events and when I go I usually nurse a beer or glass of wine. I'll save my embarassing drunken moments with EvilDUers that love me sober or drunk!

16. I recall being uppity once....or twice or thrice
My boss' son had a bistro that went out of business..and they wanted to employ their best employees....hey...before they came to the 'oil' company they served food and drinks.

Anyway...I recall when a former waitress asked what a staple remover was used for I thought "what an idiot" then of course I realized that 'staple remover' was not a fetal thing..it was something one l e a r n e d ....just as I had. I love it when feel superior to the rest of the human race...never lasts long...but feels good for about a second! :bounce:
