I could admire Woody Allen, Richard Gere, and Audioslave more.

1. ahhh....Audioslave
3 of the 4 members were from Rage Against the Machine, an unfortunately defunct leftist militant rock band. I consider their guitarist, Tom Morello, my hero and the reason I got into politics (although, he really isn't a democrat...)

but, I didn't know Chris Cornell (lead singer, former lead singer of Soundgarden) was a democrat...I liked them anyways, so it doesn't matter to me that much...

45. Are you sure Cornell is a Dem?
I remember seeing an interview with him where he stated how p*ssed off he was when MTV was doing the whole Rock The Vote thing in '92 because he felt they didn't mean to get out the vote overall, that they meant to get out the vote for Clinton/Democrats.

I'm not saying that makes him a republican, but it still doesn't necessarily make me think he's liberal.

November 6, 2001

Mr. O’Reilly,

On the evening of October 31st you ran a story that has no basis in truth. What is not important is your attack of the performers who gave their time to raise money during the telethon for the September 11th fund. What is important is your accusation that the fund is being mishandled and misused. That sir, as you know, is nothing short of a lie.

The fund is intact and has already handed out some 36 million dollars to victims’ families (fifteen thousand checks), with over $230 million more to be allocated as The United Way sorts through the complicated process of who is in the most need. To have given out all of the money only six weeks after it was raised, would truly be irresponsible. If you were a journalist you would have known that.

If you were doing your job you would have also known that the person put in place to run the September 11 Fund is a man named Frank Thomas. Now that’s not the baseball player Bill, but rather the man who headed the Ford Foundation for several years. The Ford Foundation, Mr. O’Reilly, is one of the greatest charitable organizations in the world….. (Not a car dealership…. but I’m sure you knew that). Mr. Thomas is a man respected worldwide and I would enjoy watching you question his character publicly.

…..No Mr. O’Reilly, even you wouldn’t do that.

So, let’s re-cap.

The fund is not only the most successful single fundraiser ever (over 260 million dollars); it is also doing exactly what it is designed to do. Responsibly. The money is going out to the right people and to make certain of this, the United Way is taking some time.

It took one phone call to find this information. One phone call you did not make. But hey, it’s the first week of sweeps and you need to run a hard-hitting expose’ of irresponsible, pampered performers and try to bait them on your show with inflammatory statements. I’m sure it must have been frustrating for you that not one person took the bait. Hell Bill, even McCarthy got a few people to show up.

Here’s the problem, and why I’m forced to respond: People are coming up to me and asking if it’s true the telethon was a fraud. That means the next time we try to raise money, like when the CD from the telethon comes out this month, fewer people will participate. Because of your unsubstantiated, untrue statements about the September 11 Fund, You, Mr. O’Reilly will be taking money away that from people who need it….and all because it’s the first week of sweeps.

I will say this; you were right about one thing. You accused all of the performers of lying. You named them one by one and read each of their excuses for not responding to you.

Tom Cruise, “Too busy”.
Brad Pitt, “Too busy to respond”.
Tom Hanks…..you get the idea.

You’re right, Mr. O’Reilly, we lied…all of us. Of course we weren’t too busy. And if you were Peter Jennings, or Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Charlie Rose, The Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, or pretty much anybody else, we would have dropped everything and explained what we know. You see Bill, these are journalists. So, yes we lied when we said we were too busy to do your “entertainment show”. We were just trying to not hurt your feelings.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the February sweeps.

Your biggest fan,

George

15. I judge artists by their art, not their politics. . .
and see their politics through a prism devoid of their art. For this reason, I can enjoy the poetry of Ezra Pound and the novels of Louis Ferdinand Celine, while holding the works of Dalton Trumbo and Bertolt Brecht in equal esteem. I can also denounce Pound and Celine for their adherence to fascism, while praising the good fights of Trumbo and Brecht. Here's the dichotomy laid bare: I named my son Dalton, yet encourage him to read the Cantos.

20. June Lockhart
June Lockhart, mom on the Lassie TV show and also on Lost in Space and Petticoat Junction. A while back Larry King interviewed her (I guess it was around 1990 or so). Keep in mind this is to the best of my recollection.

In a nutshell she received an award for something she did in the 1950s. President Eisenhower presented it to her. She said that she was very happy because she was a huge supporter of Ike and was a Republican to boot. After Ikes presidency her discontent with the GOP started to grow. I think it was during Watergate that she quit the GOP in disgust, and on Larry King she didn't kave kind words to Larry about the current state of the GOP (1990ish).

I like to be a fly on the wall when she expresses her thoughts about Boy George. I can't possibly think she is impressed with him or his handlers.

I don't know if she is a democrat or not but she is on our side. I always liked her anyway.

30. Some people surprised me on Bill Maher's old show
Deborah Norville was very liberal, witty, and articulate on Maher's old "Politically Incorrect" show. And Patrick Duffy (of "Dallas") really spoke up against the conservatives. Who knew? And Molly Ringwald. She totally waxed the conservatives on the panel. Imagine. Getting trounced by teen princess Molly.

35. Molly Ringwald on "The Outer Limits"
She did an episode called "Judgement Day", about a reality show like "America's Most Wanted", except that the survivors of a murder victim got to chase and "execute" the murderer on TV. Chris Elliot played an over-the-top, evil TV programming executive.

One of their best episodes. Check their website or the Sci-Fi Channel and watch it the next time it comes on.

36. ~sigh~ Leonardo.......
really, really, don't like his acting...but - he's a progressive sort, makes a point of driving around town in one of those little Honda hybrids. Comes shopping or something here in Old Pasadena.

Leonardo story:

My daughter was walking from the Starbucks at the corner of the Macy's over to my office for a ride home, and was wearing a top that showed her shape more than she realized - she's a bit self-conscious about it, even at age 18 - and collected a couple of leers and ogles. One guy walked by, though, bandanna around head, nice looking young man she thought, and just gave her a pleasant smile. What a nice change from the leers, she thought - and then as she walked a little further she realized who the pleasant young man was, and got slightly freaked, because she doesn't care for his acting or roles much either.
