I am going to be an election judge this Nov, any advice would be

1. Don't be afraid to call the county elections bureau if...

you have a controversy on election day. They get paid to help you run your polling place. Have a cell phone at your disposal all day long.

Most problems are trivial - people who are at the wrong polls, people who, unbeknownst to them, have had their registration moved to a new address by motor-voter regs.

Congratulations and kudos for doing an important job.

It is a great way to do something for the community and a great way to keep in touch with your neighbors.

5. Cell phone

Check your laws. Cell phones aren't allowed in our polling places. At least not for use by officials "behind the barrier".

Have fun. I've been doing it for years and it's an excellent way to meet your neighbors. (Granted I'm in a small town.)

2. Fair and Balanced.

This seems obvious but it is good to mention that you should be as fair as possible. It could mean that you are benefiting a politician you do not agree with. Electoral scandals just are not that fun (anymore)!

4. Good advice. I hope the Republican judge feels the same.

I just want to go in, do my job, then go home kick back and watch the totals roll in.

I don't expect many voters in my precinct, so we will sit and wait.

6. Make absolutely sure

that you have someone scheduled to open your polling place in the a.m. Twice I've been stuck at a polling place at 6 am on the outside looking in....dealing with the rabid early morning voters and frantically calling the board of elections. Touch bases the night before with whoever has the keys. It makes that 5:15 set up go that much more smoothly.
