That's about all she didn't have done! The list is endless, but the main things she had done were dental surgery and cleaning, removal of a growth from inside her ear, blood work, more tests, X-Rays, numerous injections (anesthesia, antibiotics, pain meds). She is not a happy camper, at the moment, but is going to feel so much better after everything heals!:-)

but she ate a little of her wet food which is a good sign. She looks a little more relaxed, if that's possible. Her vet said that her bad teeth were so painful that she jumped when he just touched one even though she had been given general anesthetic! Poor kitty! So she has to be feeling better than she did!;(

I had made an appointment for my poor kitty, but brought my dog, also, because I had a meeting and they said I could leave him, as well, because he was due for a check-up. It was a good thing I did, since he was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and is on medication, and my poor cat is still feeling the effects of general anesthesia! My little dog has been very stressed since he lost his ``sister'' three months ago.;(

Yes, I certainly love my guys, but get discouraged since something always seems to be wrong with somebody. I just wonder what I am doing wrong. I don't have a photo of my scared kitty to post, but here is my little guy, with his ``sister,'' in happier times!:-)

My little dog was having tummy problems and my cat had, well, you name it. Both are rescue. I rescued my poor kitty, myself. She was living in a culvert under the road. I fed her for five months before finally trapping her, using a ``have a heart'' trap, just before the weather got really bad. She does have a lot of health problems, but is lucky to be alive at all.;(

No, dinner was extra. I picked up a sandwich for me, earlier, and cat and dog food and treats while I waited for my cat to come around after her surgery. (My veterinarian is at Banfield, within PetsMart, so it is one-stop shopping.) Poor kitty had a general anesthetic and it still hasn't completely worn off!:boring:

Of course I feel that way, but I only have one cat and one dog, now! It seems like something's always wrong with somebody. My cat is an exception, I guess, because she was on her own for so long and had no one to care for her until she found me. I also feel very guilty for having put it off for so long because she must have been mighty uncomfortable, but I needed help in catching her! My friend had to come into my house and help me catch her just to bring her to the vet!:o

This one is definitely not Rhiannon! I had Rhiannon only a few days when I decided I'd better take her to the vet for a check-up. But how would I get her in the carrier?:shrug: That was a no-brainer! I called her, she came, and I didn't even really need a carrier with her. She let me carry her anywhere, tucked under my arm. I miss my perfect cat, but am so grateful I was finally able to rescue this poor abandoned girl.:cry:

It seems like everything's going up, these days. I have a large insurance bill that's due. What do you get from that unless something terrible happens to you?:shrug:

One advantage that you all have over us poor beleaguered Americans is universal health care. Howard Dean mentions Canada in every speech he makes promoting that, I've noticed!:-)

And I have to pay every month for a ``wellness plan'' for each of my two dogs, and now my cat, whether I take them to the vet or not. It's really worth it, if I do take them, though. I would have spent $1065.73 !!! today if I didn't have them on the ``wellness plan,'' because so much is automatically covered. It does rip my heart out to get the bill, however, because I lost my other dog, my sweet Sheena, three months ago, and it serves as a monthly reminder of how much I miss her.:cry:

I sometimes feel like the Typhoid Mary of pets, especially having lost both of my beloved cocker spaniels in six months. All my animals are rescue and I take older animals that would be hard to place, but it still is not easy to accept illness, let alone losing them, if you love them.;(

My rare little dog was threatened with euthanasia twice, because his previous owner died and no one wanted him, until he found me. My poor kitty was abandoned by a neighbor who moved. I don't know the reason that she never told me she had lost a cat as she was so very grateful that I found and returned her dog when he got loose, more than once. I do try to do the best that I can, but beat myself up when it's not enough. I am blessed with a brilliant vet and kind friends, including those on DU, who are very supportive.:hi:

My amazing cat, Rhiannon, is my DU namesake!:D

I had an opportunity to get pet health insurance, but of my two dogs and two cats, only one, Rhiannon, was less than 10 years old so it would have been extremely expensive. She was the healthiest, and youngest, pet I had, at only seven. I never dreamed that she would have gotten so very sick at such a young age. I would be very pleased with the ``wellness plans'' at Banfield, if I had not lost my Sheena. All the routine care is covered and they have saved me a lot. I would recommend them, but I am still paying for Sheena, who I recently lost and that is tough, emotionally.:-(

I react the same as you do. I take my guys in whenever I worry, which is often. Plus, there is usually, for my guys, a very good reason. Sheena had acupuncture, a special anti-cancer diet, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and a special herbal tea, that I had to brew for her, after she was diagnosed with cancer. She fought hard, as did I, but she also had Cushing's Syndrome, hyperadrenocorticism, which may have compromised her immune system, making it more difficult for her to fight the disease.;(

These are all my first pets so I've never had to go through losing one. I got them all within about a years time about 10 years ago. First cat was by accident because she was a stray and living under my porch freezing and starving. I took her in for the weekend and called the animal shelter to pick her up the following Monday. She very slyly "adopted" me and my son over the weekend and my son feel in love with her so we had to keep her. Sneaky little bitch! LOL! Her name is Socks.

So then months later I decided I wanted to rescue a male kitten from the shelter. I picked out a 4 week old that was part of a litter that had lost the mother cat. He was such a scrawny little bit he fit in the palm of my hand. He was malnourished and turned out to be a bit sickly so I had to feed him with a dropper and nurse him along for a while. He was such a little punk I gave him a brave, lionly name MUFASA! (Plus that was a Lion King character my son liked at the time) He's a big cowardly baby now.

Boober is just Boober. Friendly as hell and while he barks at strange noises the most harm he's ever do is lick someone to death. If I ever had a burgler I'd have to pick him up and throw him at the intruder to get any protection. (Not really - he used to go insane and growl at a contractor who raised his voice at me all the time - hehe)

I'm sorry about what you went through with the loss of your Sheena. I don't know if I could handle that now. I'm getting to be a sissy about such things as I get older. I'm not looking forward to having to decide anything like having to put one of them to sleep. Right now they are all healthy and pains in my butt.:D

Here is my tiny Meneken. He was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and may be in the early stages of glaucoma. I already knew his eyesight was poor. He ate all his food and took his meds today with no problem. Send positive thoughts his way. He is still missing Sheena so much and is lying behind me in my chair as I'm typing this.;(


I must get a photo of my poor scared kitty to post. I am hoping that now that she'll be feeling a lot better, she'll be less skittish.:shrug:

Meneken is jus's a little feller! With dogs I've always had a preference for the smaller ones, although the big ones love me and can tell I'm a sucker for any friendly pooch. I like a lap dog - not to be confused with one that WANTS to get in my lap, but one that actually FITS! LOL!

Rhiannon has a beautiful coat! It shines and even looks soft in the picture.

friend who I am hoping will put it up so I can post it. Poor little girl has only two teeth left! She is also black, which is the reason I first noticed her when Rhiannon had to spend two nights away from me, on an IV at the vet's. Yes, Rhiannon was very special. The cat of a lifetime, for me.:-(

I was so grateful that I did notice this kitty and was finally able to bring her in. She is pretty feisty, which is good, and that's probably the reason that she was able to survive on her own for so long. She is feeling better today, I think, and is now running around the room.:-)

My little guy is asleep behind me. He was also on his own because his owner died, as did Sheena's! His first adoptive home didn't work out and the guy who took him was threatening to have him euthanized when I heard about him from a friend in dog rescue. Can you imagine?!:o

37. Okay, finally, here's a photo of my scaredy-cat,

for what it's worth. It's not the best photo, but at least you can tell it's a cat!:shrug:

I am currently trying to get her to eat something, anything soft, since I imagine her mouth is still really sore. Fancy Feast grilled chicken, her favorite, which contains pieces, has to be difficult for her to chew with only two teeth! She vomited it up, so I have reverted to ground cat food and baby food, which were never her preferences before, but she has to eat something, poor kitty.:-(

It's good for cats. Avoid milk, though, until you are sure she can handle it. Some cats are lactose intolerant but cream or soured milk should be ok.

It's difficult to tell, but it doesn't look as if she drank any. It evaporates after a couple of hours, so the level goes down, in any case. I will try once again, but if she really won't try it, I guess I could use it in coffee.:shrug:

I tried baby food, as well, which doesn't require chewing. Her vet said this is very safe and I gave that often to Rhiannon. That I know she didn't touch. She hasn't pooped in her box since her vet visit, which worries me since the X-Rays showed her to be constipated. This happened the last time I took her to the vet, as well. It wasn't as traumatic for her as last time, but she can't have enjoyed the experience.:-(

There was a lady at the vets the other day with her bird. Apparently the little bird had laid 11 eggs in the last 4 days, and she wanted the vet to make it stop :)

Our vet takes care of exotics too.. There are pictures of them all ove the place. They have iguanas, tortoises, llamas, birds, snakes,and some others ..in addition to cats & dogs :)

I agree with you about veterinary medicine. This particular veterinarian changed this practice when he and his partner bought it. I am told that everything is done in the safest way possible for the animals. Every precaution is taken, They are treated the way you or I would be treated if we were facing surgery. It is more expensive, but most people regard their pets as members of the family and are willing to spend whatever it takes. I have had horrific vet bills, but would I have spent twice as much if it meant that I would still have my Rhiannon or Barney or Sheena? You know the answer.;(

These practices also treat exotics. I have seen many birds, bunnies, guinea pigs and I know they also treat reptiles. They also are the place, in this area, where injured wildlife are treated. I was there when someone came to pick up some baby squirrels and my vet told me about treating an injured crow and a mouse!:o

They are wonderful with my guys, and very kind to me. Who would have thought I would be bringing a cat or dog for acupuncture? My Rhiannon and both of my cocker spaniels have been treated with it, plus herbs and other innovative treatments not on offer at a conventional practice. I consider myself, and my guys, very lucky to have found them, despite the dent in my bank account.

Not only did her dental surgery leave her with only two remaining teeth, on the same side, no less, but the biopsy of her ear, which came back negative last time is positive this time. I have to bring her back to her vet on Thursday for a check-up.:-(

I guess I am not surprised to learn that you have and care for animals. The problem with my poor rescued cat is that I cannot medicate her. I cannot even touch her, but she still deserves the best medical care and not to suffer. Her vet, who IMHO, is brilliant, gave her long-acting injections, but I am sure that the pain meds have worn off in a week. He has more ideas about what he can do for her when I take her back on Thursday; just send me positive thoughts that I can get her there without injury to either of us.:-)

BTW, how are you feeling? How is the physical therapy going and are you still on those blasted crutches? I was on mine for awhile and my arms got quite strong. It was a long time ago, when I was away at boarding school, but you never forget. The muscles remember. I just wish someone had invented the ``fanny pack'' in time for me to use it!:D

And no, I did not spend this much on dinner, though that was a previous guess. My dinner bill was separate, a tuna sub, which God_bush_n_cheney would appreciate. You must remember that I never flamed you for your dinner bill. I know that the homeless animals negotiated a better deal than you did and that you would have been forced to subsist on kibble, if not for your glorious mother.:D

BTW, I am currently reading ``The Greatest Sedition is Silence.'' I had intended to mention it when I was further along. The chapter on Enronomics is tough going for me, but the book is extremely well-written and I am honored to have a passing acquaintance with the author. So There!:P

45. Good news! I took both my guys back to the vet for a re-check!

My little dog's tummy and eye problem are much better and my cat's mouth has healed quite well and her ear looked good. He said that for the first time he could see her eardrum, since he had removed the mass and it was healing. He has decided that further, much more serious, surgery is unnecessary right now and that he can probably control the growth by removing it, if necessary, on a yearly basis! To me, that means that she is not in mortal danger.:party:
