I wrote a letter to the editor criticizing the war,
and I got threatening phone calls! These rightwing nuts are the same ones who claim we're fighting for our freedoms, such as freedom of speech. Of course, in this country only certain speech is free. Has anyone else had such an experience? What did you do about it?

1. I would just love one of these m-f-ers to threaten me
I need to write more letters to the editor.

Don't worry about them. They are universal cowards. They are afraid of everything. They know this and that makes them even more afraid.

2. those rightwing nuts aren't wanting freedom of speech,
just freedom of everybody to be Christian fundies.

Threatening phone calls, eh? Hm, maybe you should just stop answering the phone for a week or so. I wouldn't worry about physical violence--most of that type is all talk and no action.

3. Mine was just published today in the Wilmington News Journal
I'd love to get a call from the idiots. My letter was about how Bush wants to cut benefits for Veterans. My closing line:

Bush has never been a friend to the military. Please do not allow the false sense of patriotism he waves in our faces to distract you in the 2004 election.

10. I don't post the link because my full name is in there
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 10:45 AM by LynneSin
But I'll post the letter and send you the link.

Freepers and other right-wing nut jobs will call and complain about this stuff, I'd rather not make it that freaking easier to do.

Veterans' eligibility for benefits at risk

President Bush has shown his true colors by pushing a bill through Congress that would reduce the number of veterans who can qualify for disability benefits.

Several veteran groups, including the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans, have denounced this bill. The greatest show of patriotism for those who served in war is to ensure we take care of them after their service is completed.

Since the start of this war in Iraq, neoconservative Republicans and pundits have been saying anyone who doesn't support the war must not support our troops and therefore must be anti-American. Yet these same neoconservative Republicans are backing Bush's bill, which will be a slap in the face to war veterans.

How about we cut back on this costly war in Iraq and exuberant tax cuts that benefit mainly the wealthy, to make sure we provide health coverage to all those who served our country. I urge everyone in Delaware to write to U.S. Rep. Michael Castle, Sen. Joseph Biden and Thomas Carper and ask them to support the Democrats and moderate Republicans who are against these cuts.

Bush has never been a friend to the military. Please do not allow the false sense of patriotism he waves in our faces to distract you in the 2004 election.

Lynne SinX

btw, the original letter I sent to them (only 2 days ago) was of course, edited. I had added some numbers to include the fact that it only costs 17.6billion a year to provide benefits for our vets and then I segued into cutting back on the war or tax cuts to ensure we can fund benefits for our Vets

12. If you have caller ID
You can nail their asses. Call blocking works for people with caller ID block. If they REALLY want to call they have to show their sorry ass phone numbers. THEN you got em!

7. Years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor about......
the murder of the abortion doctor in Florida and the extremes of the anti-abortionists. After I received a couple of threatening phone calls, I had my number unlisted. Then I realized that SBC intended to charge me $1.80 a month to NOT list my phone number, I put it back in the book under George Eliot!!

8. if you can document that you are being harrased
and the phone company should work with you to determine that - then they will give you an unlisted # no charge. Future reference, I guess.

9. Get an answering machine with date/timestamp and Caller ID
keep records and the tapes.

Comes in handy if you actually can nail somebody.

These types probably don't have enough brain cells to figure out how to block caller ID.

11. Welcome to the club!
Mine wasn't about the war, but I was commenting on one of Michael Ramierez's anti-Democrat pro-GOP (typical for that asshole) cartoons in the LA Times.

Some drunk asshole called my house at 1am and called me a racist and a fag and all other lovely names.

Turns out this jerk is a doctor in Bev Hills. I still have his number blocked and kept his info just in case.

13. Document it
Report it to authorities if it gets serious. If you're feeling particularly courageous, write another LTE outlining the threats that your have received and point out the irony and hypocrisy of it all. I think some will be shocked that you were treated like that and you may even find support in surprising corners.
