There are 15 ft waves crashing up against the seawalls and people surfing all over the place.

I know the waves have been something here and the beach erosion at the jetty has been very heavy,and this was from the outskirts of Isabel. All the cruise ships are gone and the smaller gambling ships are in port, missing out on business since last night.

This was our dilemma...

We've been working on our fiberglass swimming pool refinishing it and just got it painted in time before all this rain and my pool was completely empty and now is half full of rain water, that's alot of liquid in a short time. Luckily the paint was dry enough but I pumped it out once and need to do it again soon.

That's what is bad about hurricanes besides the wind is the flooding. On my vacation visiting my sister this past summer, her house is near a cove but waterview of Crescent Beach three sides of her house. When Hurricane Bob in the early nineties came through, her house was on wooden stilts so her house was saved where others floated away.
Now the insurance companies and county requirements is rebuild them on concrete stilts and after twenty years not seeing the place I was just amazed to see all these houses up in the air, some very tiny cottages so high up but that's how they dealt with their disaster.

In my area alone and throughout Florida how much the rates have gone up, it really is a monopoly for the insurance companies to raise rates, drop you and put into a pool and wait for one that accepts ya.
I am in the middle of that myself being a long time customer of Allstate they were leaving Florida with their policies not being renewed so they said. I'm under another when all this was going on in the middle of doing my pool. Just as Hurricane Isabel was starting to stir my new insurance
came out to take pictures and said you need water in the pool to be insured regardless of seeing it being refinished. I couldn't believe it but understood the empty part but it was the timing with one hurricane rolling across the Atlantic. Yes I was lucky it didn't come this way and as soon as we can get the pool filled with water I'll have the insurance come out and take a picture, right now it's full of rain water and that should count. :D

The insurance companies have you coming and going but we have no choice but to pay but with a less favoring corporation adminstration we will be so much better off to be able to afford the insurance coverage to deal with any storm.

Still call for 6 to 10 inches of rain plus high winds in PA. I understand the summer has been wet and there's a real possibility for heavy flooding.

I hope the storm is waning for you guys now. The winds are expected to pick up tonight with rain starting about midday tomorrow. This area (Phila.) is expected to get 4-5 inches of rain and wind gusts exceeding 50 MPH.

I hope it weakens and not much happens but everyone be prepared, hurricanes are so dangerous and alot of folks make mistakes and step outside in the middle of the eye thinking it's over with and it comes back around just as furious and even stronger. I've been through a few of them myself, my first was Hurricane Donna, I was 6 watched my tree go the other way instead of on my house in 1960 in the city of New Bedford, Ma...so even with taller buildings there's no stopping it and I wonder how DC will take it if it's in it's path like they are saying.

11. The first one I remember was Hurricane Agnes

back in the early 1970's. I remember the Schuylkill river overflowing its banks and covering several major roadways with downed power lines and trees all along where there used to be cars. My parents took us to the park when it was safely over to see the damage and those images are still with me.

Sorry to hear about your insurance woes. Allstate is the absolute worst but none of them are very good. You're right, they have us all where they want us, paying through the nose only to get dropped at a moment's notice.

We'll be careful. I think I'll spend the rest of the night in the basement putting boxes of ornaments and other valuables up high just in case of flooding. I hope there aren't any more spiders down there, especially relatives of the one I killed the other day. :scared:

i'm in downtown baltimore in view of the inner harbor; news heads just announced probable MTA (trains, light rail, buses) will stop running tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., which means that you can get to work but not home.
all amtrak trains south have been canceled, too.
also, the artifacts from harpers ferry have been moved to safety, and most schools in the entire state have already closed for the next two days.
the dollar store was great for candles and battery-powered radios! no crowds there!

NASA/Goddard is shutting down tomorrow evening, and my office will powering off our computers tomorrow afternoon. I'll probably be shutting down my home equipment tomorrow morning before I leave for work.

Put the lawn furniture in the shed and bungied the garbage cans to the fence. Need to bring the musical instruments up from the basement -- when the power goes out, the sump pumps will stop running, so I'll have one lovely indoor swimming pool by Friday afternoon. Sigh.

Hopefully the trees out back won't be knocked over. They're frickin' huge, and that's the last thing I need.

is just hard...generators are so handy to have but expensive and when hurricanes are coming prices even go up more....hope everyone is ready and have supplies...

Just a few days OK it was massively strong and now over warmer waters and hitting those barriers islands can be very brutal....at any number we had a one here Hurricane Erin take my screen room down in 96.

I hope precautions were taken since the length of warnings but their are those who are standing it out on those barrier islands afraid of raiding and losing their stuff with vandalism, alot easier then losing your life over material things...
they may have insurance woes like me right now...
tough situation to be in for sure.

We're experiencing some wind and light rain. I heard a commentator say that although Isabel hasn't made landfall yet the rain and winds in the Triangle are due to Isabel's rain bands. That's some big storm!

rain has just started within the past hour - looking at the satellite images on weather channel shows that it's Isabel-related. Still no local weather gods talking about tornadoes from this like we had with Fran, which is a good thing. RDU airport has gone ahead and closed for some reason or other - weird, given light weather conditions at present. Lots of local business closed. Orange County (Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough) Government closing at noon in anticipation of bad things. I'll be around DU until the cable goes out. Er, uh... "ask me anything!"

It's starting to rain here already. The winds have been kicking up since last night, although we're going to get the worst of it this evening. They're calling for lots of rain and 60-70 mph gusts. The only thing I'm really concerned about it is we have lots of construction around our house, and I highly doubt that the workers will pick up all the junk.

My brothers's up from his place in Currituck Co, NC, which he expects massive damage to. We have a case of beer and a cooler of ice, so we're just going to sit back and watch as it plows through later today.

Predictions are 5+ inches at Camp David with the storm passing directly overhead. Additionally, the satellite downlink must be located in the VA/DC area somewhere; the real time images from GOES-12 meteorological satellite are currently down.

I was wondering about that. Shouldn't he be WAY further inland?

I'm sure he would be if the assessors thought there was any danger but it just seems strange to me that the holder of the OFFICE of the Presidency wouldn't be sure.

Also like other things it would really be a good thing for him if he were to try to sell the fact that he is going through what many others are but then he had a colon scope and never mentioned it. A golden opportunity to ephasize the need for men about his age to have theirs checked out but Rove probably thought it might imply weakness and they just can't have that now can they?
