I thought this was kind of intersting. I had always figured that when I read, I'm not actually reading the words but rather quickly recognizing the words and patterns in sentence structure. This kind of re-enforces that idea.
One thing I did notice was that grouped consonants (such as double l, double t, and some blended sounds have to remain together. This is so the word still looks familiar.

Anyway, just wanted to share that.

1. I just had this very same discussion with someone last night!

Apparently, if you're a good reader, you take in the first and last letters, but those in the middle don't really matter. I must be doing okay, because it was no trouble for me to read what you wrote. Thanks so much for posting this! I'm passing it on...:-)

I think one of the posts there really nailed it. As long as the first and last two letters are in order, the middle is meaningless.

4. I'm not so sure about meaningless.

This thing has been posted a number of times in the last two or three days here, plus I've gotten a couple of emails from friends on this. And I find it's slightly amusing reading a dozen words or so, but with whole paragraphs, I simply stop reading. It's much too much effort to puzzle out the intended words.

Moral: spelling really does count, even if we can usually figure out what is meant by a misspelled word.

but I should also point out that it helps a lot that words of three letters or less are unaffected by the scrambling - and they account for more than 45% of the words in the above.
