When was the last time you were ridiculed mercilessly? You are what everyone strives to be, and I'm the fat girl that everyone hopes they don't become. You're treated so bad because you can see a little more bone than someone else. No. You're looked at and admired because you're not fat. I grew up chronically underweight and I am still chronically underweight. I will always be underweight. I assure you, people can be just as exceptionally cruel to those of us who fail on the other end of the spectrum.

97. I agree with many of you about the (extremely dangerous)

tendency of the media to promote unrealistic body types (for most Americans, that would be slender or slim).

And, yes, people can be exceptionally cruel in attacking someone because of the way they look and - even in a nation in which the majority of adults are at least 30% overweight - persons of excess poundage have long been fair game for the viciousness of such f***wits.

But check out SOteric's posts above for another perspective, the perspective of someone who's thin like a model and thus even more out of step with the physical condition of her compatriots. People who criticize her condition are the same, exactly, as those who put down an overweight person.

Sure, I'd decry the tendency to promote the look cultivated by models who literally starve and drug themselves (anorexia and bulimia, too) to be extremely thin, but please bear in mind that some people are naturally thin. It all sucks - if you're generously proportioned you're criticized for being too big; if you're more delicately proportioned you're attacked for being too little.

I voted for the Miss America types, but barely. Perhaps you noticed that they, too, are also well within the 'slim-to-skinny' category and firmly (no pun intended) at odds with the bulk (no pun intended) of America's population.

My ideal woman, physically, is impossible to define. I do tend to like curves, all things being equal. For a while now I've had a bit of a thing for dark hair. I probably have at least slight preferences for other attributes. Yes, I think that boobies are such great inventions, good for hours of good, clean fun. But these (somewhat transitory) ideals are the result of attractions that I've had, not the cause. I am attracted, physically, to women of all kinds - not that I'm a raging sex maniac (okay, so maybe I am), but just that there's a wide, wide universe of physical traits that I find innately attractive, and few that I do not. Are you the same way? I don't know.

And ANY or ALL of these quirks of preference that I may or may not hold simply fall away when it's the right woman. Because it really is the other stuff that matters. The really good stuff. Not that the external stuff isn't fun to play with, but I'm talking about the inner person.

Some of our inner people here might be feeling hurt or marginalized because they don't fit others' physical ideals. And if inner beauty was the criteria, DU is loaded with candidates for Ms America.
