Used or New?

I sold several of my books from last semester at Culinary College.
I need some opinions on whether I should by a new cheap Kitchenaid Mixer or a used professional Kitchenaid Mixer.

I can't make the decision on which one I should buy.

1. Used professional!

As long as they aren't beaten to death, the used model will offer you more features and will be able to do more.

a Kitchenaid and I STILL hug it daily.

I love my Kitchenaide mixer, in a wierd, strange, non-cat-pee related way.

And I'm not a republican.

They last forever. Put 'em in a cage with some gorillas throwing it around for awhile...it's still work.

7. I forgot to mention that we get 10% off at Chefs Cataloge Store

I need one real bad so that I can practice at home and the one that we use at College is a professional one that gets abused badly.

I usually go in and hook up 4 mixers and I take up one whole table. People think that I am nuts but I get all of my breads made and most of the other students don't finish on time.

If one dough is going and you have to make several others it's easier to make them all at once.

I spent one January with things fermenting all over the kitchen. Had a baking stone and a pan full of rocks in the oven.

I don't know what I am going to do with this stuff but I had to make it for a class project and you have to keep feeding it.
Well hell, I've got enough for everyone on DU to make Chicago Sour Dough bread.

I thought that I would change the name because I did make the stuff.

My last class was in Artesian Breads. Do you want some recipes?

21. I like the recipe I got from King Arthur...

...when I went to one of their bread-making seminars. They prefer a starter made a day ahead of time with just a pinch of yeast in a sponge. That's worked out better for me than a sourdough.

I used to keep a sourdough when I was home with the kids and had more time on my hands. Did you know you can use the sourdough starter in quick-bread recipes, too? Biscuits made with a thin sourdough starter substituted for buttermilk are just awesome. And I used to have a sourdough chocolate-cake recipe that was the moistest chocolate cake I've ever managed.

8. Should I buy it in Cat Urine Yellow?

Do they pee yellow? I know dogs do but I am not sure about cat's. I just wipe it up and hold my nose when Ramona does her business.

If you plan on using this to knead bread then the pro is a must, the cheapie is fine for just about anything else.

Sometimes the dough comes out of the top of the bowl as you are mixing it.

The head tilts back on it making it easier to get at the bowl and scrape the beaters. I can make a 6-cup batch of bread dough in it easy. I bake a LOT and mine has taken a lot of abuse but it just keeps on mixing. I love that thing.

I found one at a garage sale for $40. I had to shorten the cord but it has lasted another 10 years. It never breaks. The newer ones are not as powerful.

18. Visit a wholesale used restaurant supply house

They are open to the public now, and you'd be surprised at what is available. I can't see buying anything new when there are such great old workhorses avaliable, and such a huge variety to choose from, too. Floor models, table models...you can find just the right one if you search for it. They were built to last!

I will check into it before ordering the Martha Stewart model.

that Chicago has more then one store that meets your needs. Even the 'new' restaurant supply houses have used equipment for sale.

Get the used professional model. I sold those Kitchenaids about 20 years ago, they beat anything else on the market hands down. And they last forever.

That's how I found that website. You can get them even cheaper on eBay from the same company.
You use to sell them? Do you have a kitchen full of their stuff?
