What have you been listening to recently?
We haven't done this in a while as far as I know.

Warren Zevon - The Wind (this is a wonderful album! Now I'll look into his other stuff. He could have taught Andrew W.K. a thing or two about writing party songs - "The Rest of the Night" is a perfect one.)

Dido - No Angel (love this one, too. She sings like she has an old soul.)

Joe Diffie - Honky Tonk Attitude (good mainstream country album.)

Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall (sounds a bit samey, but there is enough fresh here to make it as great as Rainy Day Music.)

5. I'm listening to Mofro right now.
I just got their album "Blackwater" and love it.

I also got North Mississippi Allstars new album "Polaris." It is not as good as their two prior albums. The songs are too "poppy" for my tastes and the guitar work does not showcase Luther's abilities.

The other CD I listened to today was Medeski, Martin & Wood's greatest hits album.

19. You asked for it
"Who's Next" - The Who - Every year I rediscover how goddamn powerful this album is. I drive around listening to "Won't Get Fooled Again" at ear-shattering volumes again and again.

"Substance 1987" - New Order - CD copy has the original 2 LP set on one CD and a bonus CD filled with rare tracks. Some of the best music to come out of the 80s. Which brings me to...

"Permanent 1995" - Joy Division - A nice selection of songs from the unfortunately brief catalogue of the progenitor of New Order. Ian Curtis' vocals seem more haunting than ever. Good music for rainy days.

"re.ac.tor" - Neil Young and Crazy Horse - One of three NY&CH albums recently released on CD. The music itself is all rock, there are few dull moments, but some of the songs are throw-aways or sound dated or tired.

"Nocturama" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Quiet at times, raucous at others. The CD is worth buying just so you can watch the fifteen minute DVD of "Babe I'm on Fire" over and over again.

God, so fucking amazing.

I've also been getting into NRBQ (Al Anderson: my new personal god!) and have been revisiting Toots and the Maytal's "Funky Kingston." I need more gruff soul in my ears.

Glass Eye, Tommy Keene, The Coup, Cheap Trick (new album, first track: "Scent of a Woman": HOLY SHIT what a song!),Chomsky (a band from Dallas, Texas, not the linguist/political writer, although he's awesome too!), El-P, Split Enz, Cody Chestnutt: all of these have been in my discman recently.

Regina Carter used an awesome violin in her latest. She used Pagannini's Guanari del Gesu to record jazz music.

Sarah Brightman's latest has a middle-eastern theme to it and is pretty cool.

They are as good as ever! In some ways more sophisticated but they haven't lost anything in the process. Was very impressed with how they did the song "Doll Revolution." Pop perfection again and can't wait to get it tomorrow!

Speaking of Andrew W.K., I think his new album The Wolf sounds even worse than before. I Get Wet was vapid but The Wolf is stupid, with a Meat Loaf-quality added to that sound from before. It gets a D-, and I Get Wet sounded like a C-. Didn't hear all of I Get Wet.
