Anyone know if IKEA'S leather products are made out of Horse Leather?

I heard something weird in IKEA yesterday and I don't know if it was a joke or not. I would like to find out if they were speaking the truth about IKEA'S leather goods.

I was looking for a slipcover for my new sofa and love seat and I overheard a salesman talking to a customer and they asked about the leather and he said that it could either be horse or cow. My ears perked up because I thought that I was hearing something that sounded wrong.

I asked the salesman what he meant by horse and he said that they use horse leather.

How can we find out if this is true or a mad joke that this salesman was playing of people.

I also love cows but I was disgusted when I heard the salesman tell the lady that it might be horse leather. Do you know if leather from cows might have a name that sounds like horse?

made that mistake as well, was pulling away like a maniac, had no idea why my uncle was rolling on floor laughing, well you live and learn, that old bull after that had a real soft spot for me afterwards.

You remember a couple of years ago when "ponyskin" skirts and boots were in fashion? You know, the black-and-brown or black-and-white leather with the fur still on? Did you really think that came from a Holstein or Jersey cow? Nope...

The best you can do is just not buy it if it makes you upset. Then again, considering the source of the leather, the horses/ponies in question have probably outlived their useful lives, and/or died naturally already. I used to be quite involved with all things horsey for many years, so I know what happens to 'slaughter horses.' It's actually just as well that the skins from the 'knacker's yard' go somewhere, instead of just into the midden-heap.

Did you know that a lot of the leather pants they were selling at The Gap a couple of years ago (in early 2000, IIRC, while I was living in TO) were actually made from goat or pig leather? Sorry if that makes you sweat. I happen to like wearing leather, but I do try to avoid horse leather myself.
