What's the deal with "Boner?" (Inspired by the Kum & Go).

That picture got me thinking about Boner. How on Earth did those writers for the family-value shitfest sitcom "Growing Pains" ever get a character named "Boner" on national TV? Not only that, he was TedRallerific Kirk Cameron's best friend!
