Dog Attacked By 20,000 Bees - Expected To Survive
<snip>

LAKEWOOD, Calif. -- A four-year-old cocker spaniel is expected to survive after getting attacked by an estimated 20,000 bees.

Los Angeles County fire officials say the dog's owner triggered the attack when she disturbed a colony of bees while cutting brush in her backyard.

The owner was able to run inside but the dog tried to hide under a woodpile and bags of recycled cans.

Fire officials say a beekeeper was able to distract the insects by spraying them with smoke. That enabled firefighters to use a long-handled noose to pull Pinto to safety.

Pinto had dozens of bees stuck in its fur and tail, and spent the night in an animal hospital, but should be okay.

4. I saw the poor pooch on the news. She could barely stand up and was

trembling uncontrollably, and panting, waving from side to side...

I can't imagine why her owners waited so long as to let news crews film her, as opposed to rushing her off the animal emergency the instant she was away from the bees.

3. Those bees are getting a little too close for comfort, in the L.A. area.

5. They've been all around here for years, but there is a rise in swarms
that's for sure.

Los Angeles County vector control responds immediately to swarm reports and removes them free of charge, which is less costly than a bee keeper.

10. Sirius got popped by yellow jackets in Highland Park (Dallas).
I had to run home and get the car to retrieve him. He was totally prostrate and breathing heavily. Dr. DemoTex stayed with him while I got the car. By the time I picked them up, Sirius was fine.
