DINNER will soon be served with a rubber on the side as Asia's condom king prowls Australia for a sex education partner.
AIDS prevention activist and family planning expert Dr Mechai Viravaidya plans to bring his Cabbages and Condoms restaurant chain to Australia next year.
In Brisbane for an Asia-Pacific public health conference, Dr Viravaidya said the restaurants - which combine fine dining with sex education and lots of free condoms - were successful in Thailand.
And Australia needed its share of rubber, he said.
"Definitely 2005 will be the year that I will prowl and we need to look for partners who are not embarrassed by rubber," he said.
"We're ready to get something started here by next year, there's Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane as a start and even Adelaide and Perth."
Dr Viravaidya was educated in Victoria and returned to Thailand to set up his not-for-profit family planning organisations and restaurants to help fund them.
Condoms are freely available at the restaurant and sex education tools are on hand. Don't expect waiters to go into detail but Dr Viravaidya said if anyone doesn't know how to use a condom, someone will show them.
