Guys diving into foxholes, sharing smokes, screaming Medic. Sure its a testerone overload but its great. I have never seen a TV show look so good, sound so good. I mean better than most movies. The landscapes. The expolosions. And the erformances are pretty damn good -- Donny Walburg is a suprisngly convincing actor. Sgt. Winters -- that actor was born for that role.

more Russians killed in the greatest ever tank battle: Kursk, than all the rest of the Allied dead throughout the war, (maybe including SE Asia). That really broke the back of the German army. It was primarily the Russians who saved Britain, but then it was surely you Americans who saved us from Stalin and the Russians.

I was told by an elderly German gentleman at my church of the level of atrocity the German soldiers were terrified of, if they fell into Russian hands, but with a war on, I don't want to go into it.

But such was the level of viciousness on both sides - although only one was the aggressor - that you saw retreating German troops shelling farmhouses to oblivion as they passed, as they were leaving Russia.

In the UK we see cable documentaries of the battle almost every week. The Russians were so wild with rage, if they ran out of ammo, they'd often just ram the German tanks. Some of the Russian tankies were women. They don't take prisoners.

The battle lasted about two weeks, and also involved aerial bombardment, etc.

EPIC. Unbelievable.

I've seen a few instalments of Band of Brothers, and thought it was great, too. One crazy thing that really rang true was the hilarious, drunken sing-song by some of the young Americans in the trenches. I think it was Christmas, but the enemy weren't that far away, and there was no suspicion of a truce! Just like squaddies, but you seldom see it in TV or film productions.

Capt. Winters, the actor that played him, is actually a Brit. He nailed the american accent and was very consistent.
I like the Capt. Nixon character. Intellegent, cynical and sarcastic.

17. I watched the entire series when it first aired on HBO in 2001.

It moved me to tears. I had two uncles that fought in Europe during WWII. Uncle Jack landed in Normandy 3 days after the invasion and my Uncle Bob fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a replacement.

Uncle Jack never spoke of what he saw or did, but my Uncle Bob definitely had PTSD from what happened to him during the Bulge and what he saw at Dachau when the Americans liberated it.

I don't mean to sound too maudlin here, but my Dad and my uncles were my heroes growing up. They were all Roosevelt Democrats in the best sense of the expression and I thank God they're not here now to see what's happening in the US right now. It would break their hearts.

how many of the battle scenes are more "grainy" and filmed at a "jerkier" 22 frames-per-second to simulate the hand-held field motion picture cameras of the time. Some of the live-action battle scenes are made to look newsreel-ish.

Damian Lewis, the actor who played Maj. Richard D. Winters, does look a lot like the REAL Winters looked.

I watched it when it was on HBO... but it's much better on DVD!

27. One Of My Cousins Is One Of The Original "Band"

Frank Percante. He and his brother Jack were my dad's first cousins.

He was one of the guys on which that whole story is based. It was all over the local rag daily here when the show first aired.

He still lives around here. You might remember his kid. Played shortstop for the Dodgers before Steve Sax took that spot.
The Professor
