That if you take Leviticus in the context of the times, it's more of a health book than anything. The reason why there are provisions against stuff like eating shellfish and pork and shtupping your wife during her period (as well as other forms of kinky sex) is that these practices, back then, weren't too safe. They didn't have a health department (or rubbers) back in those days. Hence the "word of God".
