I have had one in the past. But have decided I do not wish to be available to all 24/7. Nor do I need the expense. I think that society needs to simplify, not continue to add one more thing. I like to keep it simple.......the family, home, dog, garden...no need to constantly complicate life.

It's funny though, if you've ever been in an emergency and without a phone people act like you are from a foreign planet these days when you tell them that you do not have a cell phone. Luckily, that only happens once in a blue moon!

You should see the look on people's faces when I tell them that I don't need one. Or that I'm not willing to pay for it. A land line in the house is expensive enough. And what is it about text messaging? It takes longer to peck out some message than it does to simply dial the number and actually talk to the person or just leave a message. The pricing packages are nothing more than legal theft. And I am amused at ordinary working men and women who carry these phones around like they are some sort of talisman or fetish. The American version of worry or prayer beads. Do we really need to be reachable 24/7/365?

but here's the trick to not letting a cell phone drive you and those you're with crazy: don't be afraid to not answer the damn thing.

If I'm talking to someone else or in the middle of something, I'll let the thing go to voicemail (it being set on vibrate of course). My guess is that a lot of the problem people have with cell phone users is purely the selection effect, you only notice the inconsiderate jerks...

I don't want to spend the money, I don't want to figure out minute details in a plan and I don't like to talk on the phone. My pager at work makes me feel like I'm on a leash.

why bother? I'm never home much and I get free long distance on my phone. I use it as my calendar, my notepad, my alarmclock and my address book. Simplify is right on, that's exactly what I have done, five tools in one. If I don't want to talk to you, I won't answer the phone, it's that simple. Verizon was charging me (including long distance) about 60-70 dollars a month for home phone service. I now pay 45 total. cheaper and simpler. If I'm at my mom's for Christmas, I can call my dad without running up his phone bill. If I'm in L for work, I can call my girlfriend for free, even is she's on travel in Miami. Plus, I have ultimate number portability (did I mention no telemarketers?) I have DC numbers of people who live in san Francisco and Dallas numbers for people in DC. Area Codes are meaningless, numbers are now attached to people, not people to numbers. I'd say most of the primary contact numbers in my phone are cell phones, no one I know is ever at home (most don't even have home numbers anymore) so why bother calling them? I like it that way, not everyone does, I understand, but it works for me.

26. I had one when I worked for Verizon Wireless

But I gave it up when they laid me off b/c they were going to make me go to a consumer plan (I was getting 500 minutes for $25 as an employee) if I kept it. Never used it anyway, except to check my email. I had people complain to me that they called me on it but it was always shut off.
If I find I have to drive a long distance to go to work I may get a prepaid one, but I definitely don't need another bill.
