I am considering getting a new car cause I think mine gets shitty MPG.

I've always been of the mind that the car still works so there isn't any need to blow money on a newer model yet. I live in a smaller town and go through a tank of gas maybe once a month so it isn't really costing me that much more in the long run...

5. I assume you mean in the city? Highway driving gets more MPG.

I checked 20 to 25 for city driving.

6. You might want to wait for one of those hybrids. I am. The prices

are coming down, and I hear there are more and more manufacturers coming out with them, so that there's a choice. And I've heard there are small SUV-like hybrids coming out (Ford? Honda? I can't remember.)

8. If you want to be truly helpful for the environment, though...it

might be better just to keep what you have. If you get rid of your vehicle and get another one, that just puts one more vehicle into circulation; someone will buy your old one, anyway. And if your aim is to save $$$, it's more economical just to keep your current vehicle for as long as possible. Unless there's something major wrong with it or it's not as safe as you'd like.

My mother on the other hand has a Mercedes SUV, which generally gets about 23 MPG.

11. I get 53-55 mpg out of a 100 bhp and 180 ft/lbs torque car

lowest tax band for company vehicles, 6 CD autochanger, climate control etc etc. One of my bikes does 35 mpg though but it goes like shit off a stick.

that gets 30 mpg. It purrs like a kitten. Except for a few rust spots which we fix as we have no garage and it sits out all winter in all the snow and ice, it still runs and even still looks good.

13. If you can't afford the higher priced hybrids,

consider a 4-cylinder, 5-speed manual transmission. I get 30-35 with my Celica. Automatic transmissions are gas guzzlers... particularly if you have to climb hills as I do. (And hybrids really only get the spectacular mileage in stop and go city traffic.) The 5-speed compensates for any lack of power the 4-cylinders may have getting up the hill.

a newish 4-cylinder turbo VW Passat. If you drive patiently, it gets 25-28 in the city and 32-35 on the highway, higher than it showed on the sticker. It is an automatic, but I usually drive it in the optional semi-manual mode. If you drive aggressively, the turbo will suck the gasoline. Fortunately, the onboard computer shows you current gas mileage, so you get instant feedback on your driving habits.

16. When you have to drive in bumper-to-bumper

rush hour traffic every day, 25 to 30 miles is pretty good, since you are idling and burning gas.
