Now that I have your attention, do any of you Americans drink Scottish malt whisky? If you do which brand(s) and how much do you pay for it? I'm just curious coz I have a glass of Glenlivet in my hand right now and I paid 19 pounds for the bottle. If I get any replies I'll tell you which one is made from a burn (that's stream to non-Scots) that I used to pee in as a child. And that's a true story. It's unlikely to affect you unless your vintage was distilled between 1966 and 1974.

8. hmmm...Lagavulin I have visited

Made on Islay an island which is pure bliss. Tiny island with superb early Christian monuments. The church at Kildalton is just wonderful as a piece of social/ecclesiatical history and the setting...just wow.

Laphraoig is another Islay whisky worth seeking out because it is sooo peaty. Islay is an excellent place to stay for a week or so...sea, big sky, geese, early monuments and fishing for trout in Loch Laggan in the shadow of a castle once occupied by ('scuse while I wipe a tear from my eye) the Kings of the Isles.

No, I didn't piss in your Speyburn though I sometimes fish the Spey. Heaven on a stick to borrow a phrase.

Next year will be another year of visiting places on my doorstep that foreign tourists flock over here to see and I don't blame them. Fishing in the shadow of a 14th century castle and having a dram of the water of life at lunchtime...money cannot buy it and thank goodness for that...sniffle.

And fishing here is as near as Nirvana as one can get apart from reading the OED>>>

I was brought up in Speyside, I drink many island malts (seven) and I love whisky period. Bourbon? Wild Turkey and Maker's Mark rock! Do a Google on Michael Jackson to learn more about the water of life...

Jackson's book is the benchmark for Scottish malt whisky.

14. Spec's Liquor Warehouse near Downtown Houston....

Has a vast selection of beer, wine & liquor (plus food) at excellent prices. A quick search finds something called Duggans Dew at $9.91 per 750 ml; at the other end is a Macallen 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch for $4,210.52. (That's not cheap, even at current exchange rates. Rumor has the One Dollar Bill being redesigned with non-toxic ink on soft, absorbent paper--so it will have some use.)

I'm not much of a Scotch drinker but have enjoyed the occasional Laphroig ($41.01 at Spec's). A bit of Irish whisky on St Patrick's day & the occasional Weller & water will fulfill my whisky/whiskey? needs. (Although I'd gladly do further research if ever lucky enough to visit Scotland.)
