The experience of life is one of duality. They'll be good times and they'll be bad times. I'm talking as a person who has known a lot of hardship in my life due to a mental illness. If you want to know what hell is like I can show you. Try living with psychosis untreated for ten years. I never sought help because I thought it was something to be conquered on my own. Yeah, I'll be alright just leave me alone. That kind of thing. I never realized how sick I was until I started getting treatment.

It can be a lot worse J-man. It could have been a lot worse even for me. I know a little of what you are going through right now from your discussions here on DU. Hang in there, bro. It'll get better.

12. I use to have this little old lady, a Jehova....

....come to my door; her name was Mrs. Napp. I would tell her everytime, that I was a lapsed Catholic and had no interest at all in religion. But there she would be, like clockwork at least once a month - rain, snow, it didn't matter, so I let her talk.

I always liked her explaination for why life was hell, she told me that earth is not God's domain, and that He will not interfere for man here. This is Satan's domain,she said, that is why there is greed, sickness, pain, ect.....

She honestly believed that everyone, would go to heaven eventually, that God never intended us to be perfect and that he would forgive anything. Kind of nice really. :)

She's sweet (and a hot lovely woman tags along with her.) Slowly I've been throwing out questions about Bush and his invasion of Iraq and what that's doing to the world, or Bush just might be the Anti-Christ, etc...she seems stunned but never upset and always writes a little note each week when she drops off the Watchtower...surprisingly not pro Bush, but always with some strange bizzare twist...

9. Duality...

I don't have the answer, really, but I think life is hell because we label our experiences (i.e.; 'good' or 'bad'). If we just experienced, without putting values on them, maybe we would feel differently about life. Also, we're brainwashed regarding what success or a happy, 'productive' life is. Most of what we've been told is a big, fat lie, and let's face it, most of us can't live up to the lies we've been sold.

It seems we're always everywhere but 'here', 'now'. That sounds like hokey, new-age bs, but it's true. A lot of the mess in the world has been created because people will not live in the now--they're in the past, or the future--they dream of heaven, or being wealthier, prettier, etc., thus they neglect the reality right in front of them.

That's my honest guess. How else do you explain the existence of traffic lights which turn red late at night when there's nobody coming the other way; the punishment of women via the burden of menstruation and childbirth; the existence of Idi Amin, Adolf Hitler, Pauly Shore, Ann Coulter, Boston (the rock band), et al.; the death of Paul Wellstone, RFK, MLK, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, JFK, and Danny Casolero long before their time is due while Strom Thurmond lives to be 100; the glimpses of larger, better, more beautiful and mysterious things which last seconds and leave us all parched for another drink, while the average workday lasts eight hours, the existence of both marijuana and marijuana laws......

13. If it were too good we wouldn't appreciate it

I know this is true. Things are also relative. Have you ever found yourself on either end of these situations: Wanting to lose weight and complaining to a person fifty pounds heavier than you who thinks that you look great, complaining to someone that you will have to cut back on your holiday spending when that person can barely afford to feed their family and sees you as rich, or complaining to your subordinate at work who had ambitions of his/her own but has been stuck in the same position for most of his/her career that you just cannot seem to get a better position, one that would better suit you. When you say "Why does my life have to be so bad?" relize that it is possible that many people wish they were you. I have been in all the example situations and relized that this is true and felt so bad when I did.

23. There's the theory

That we choose our own hell or pain as spiritual beings before we our born in order to learn things and to teach others. I don't pretend to know if this is the right answer, but it's, in a way, an interesting concept. As I look back on some difficulties life has dealt to me, it sometimes helps to understand where would I be and who would I be for this painful experience not to happen. Usually, somewhere, some type of knowledge is gained along the path. Some things, I still yet do not understand.

I am truly grateful for the 'hells' I have been through so far for the lessons I've learned from them....knowing that I'd not be who I now am without them.

for providing that contrast to those experiences we label as "good", "heaven". Hell also provides the learning and proving ground against which we find out who we are.

No where is it written that this life will always be good, rewarding, and filled with golden moments. Besides who would want that?
