Master and Commander again.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie kicks ass? Especially the sound (which won a very well deserved Oscar). You can hear every little splash of water hitting the outside of the ship :). It's awesome!

3. I liked it better

the second time I saw it(this time is the third, it is just on in the background). The fighting scenes are amazing, the sounds. I was in a storm twice on a small sail boat out in the open ocean and it really wails and screams like that, scared the heck outta me. BTW, I just saw something I had not noticed before. Did you see the guy sitting on the side of the boat doing the bathroom thing in the snow? Cracked me up.

6. No, I didn't see it, but I'll keep an eye out :)

I liked it better the second time I saw it too :).

The first time, I only had stereo speakers, not surround.

The second and third times I had surround but a smaller and older (curved screen) TV.

Now I have digital surround and a 37 inch flat screen (CRT still, not a flat panel). The picture and sound are about 1,000 times better than the first time I watched it, I don't have to strain to hear dialogue during more intense scenes anymore :)

12. Daaaayum!

That sounds pretty amazing. You will have to wait until the next time you see it. It happens right after they pass the horn, the mates are complaining that they can't hold West anymore, Captain tells them to go South. The order is then given to head South and as the boat turns it shows this old guy sitting on some boards off the side of the ship with his pants around his ankles. Seriously, it cracked me up.

8. Yeah, a friend of mine saw it and complained saying it was

unrealistic for them to have gotten their full uniform on before a battle. I was like . . . DUDE, they're British during the Napoleonic Wars, this wasn't to long after the Revolutionary War, hell, the army still fought in marching formation :)

Didn't they change it to a French ship for the movie? I thought in the book Captain Jack Aubry was fighting an American ship during the War of 1812? I believe the movie is actually two books by Obrian: Master & Commander and another of Obrian's works called The Far Side of the World

of the movie is:

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Seemed like a title of one part of a series to me, i.e. there's also a Master and Commander: XXXXXXXXXX and Master and Commander: YYYYYYYY, etc. :)

31. It's still early -- you could make it tonight

You could still make it to the bookstore tonight, and it would be worth your time. Besides being fantastic books, they are probably the most accurate pieces of historical fiction imaginable. Everything from the ships, to the "uniforms" to the language is flawless.

The word "amazing" just doesn't quite cover it.

but the overall story line was weak. I didn't think it deserved to be in as many Oscar races as it ended up in. Maybe that makes me too selective with my movies, but I've become too spoiled by too many well written, well acted, well directed, and well shot movies to let Master and Commander earn a positive review.

I can buy that you think the overall story line was weak, but the cinematography in this movie was fantastic. Don't get me wrong, you're obviously entitled to your opinion, I just can't quite understand the part about "well shot." :)

It was beautifully shot but the direction, the writing, the acting, could have all been much better. The package of bad makes the good weaker in my opinion. Which is, needless to say, my opinion. Doesn't make it right, just makes it mine.
