Armed gang steals escalator. Hoping to move up in the world?

A subway station in southern China has been forced to delay its opening after an armed gang broke in and stole the escalator, a news report said today.

A gang of 24 men held up builders and looted the construction site at Gouwugongyuan station in Shenzhen, stealing an entire escalator and six steel pillars.

There is currently a worldwide steel shortage...and escalators contain several tons of steel.

Believe me when I tell you that there was a fence and a dismantling crew sitting somewhere in Shanghai waiting for this escalator to arrive. By the time you read this article, they had taken the escalator apart, hauled it to a steel mill and turned it into molten metal.

(An aside: I really hate that the present tense and past tense of the verb "read" are spelled exactly the same.)

how they managed to get the pieces out of the construction site, took them to a secure location, and dealt with the parts afterwards. This begs the question, "is that an escalator in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?"
