19. French Toast, is ..

bread, usually a day old. not really really fresh bread, dipped in egg that has been hmmmmm , put in a bowl and whisked, .. the bread is then fried on both sides .. some people add vanilla to the egg mixture, and cinnamon , maybe some nutmeg. Serve with warmed maple syrup, bacon or ham or sausage, sometimes fresh fruit or compote.

Here is a recipe that works well and IS delicious.


INGREDIENTS:

* 1 cup slivered almonds
* 3 eggs
* 1 cup milk
* 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 12 thick slices French bread
* 3 tablespoons canola oil
* 3 tablespoons butter
* confectioners' sugar for dusting (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place almonds in a small saucepan over low heat. Tossing frequently, toast until lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and set aside.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, flour, salt, baking powder, almond extract and vanilla extract. Soak bread slices in the mixture until saturated. Place slices in a shallow pan. Refrigerate slices approximately 1 hour.
3. Heat canola oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. One at a time, press one side of soaked bread slices in the almonds to coat. Fry bread slices on both sides until golden brown. Dust with confectioner's sugar before serving,

I used to make grilled cheese sandwiches with french toast on the outsides instead of just buttered bread .. kids loved them!

10. I just made French toast yesterday.

I made it out of cinnamon bread. Ideally, I'd have served homemade cinnamon syrup with it, but I was sort of in a hurry, so we just had store-bought maple syrup.

Scotland. I find the fake maple syrup like log cabin to be too sickly sweet, but the REAL stuff ..now that's good.

30. I was just looking at this Alton Brown recipe the other day

1 cup half-and-half
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons honey, warmed in microwave for 20 seconds
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 (1/2-inch) slices day-old or stale country loaf, brioche or challah bread
4 tablespoons butter

In medium size mixing bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, honey, and salt. You may do this the night before. When ready to cook, pour custard mixture into a pie pan and set aside.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Dip bread into mixture, allow to soak for 30 seconds on each side, and then remove to a cooling rack that is sitting in a sheet pan, and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch nonstick saute pan. Place 2 slices of bread at a time into the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and place on rack in oven for 5 minutes. Repeat with all 8 slices. Serve immediately with maple syrup, whipped cream or fruit.
