5. Friends

God yes, truly one of the worst shows ever. I've never understood its popularity. I don't like any of the characters and just never thought it was funny.

Other choices, off the top of my head:

Full House--deliver us from the Olsen Twins. And John Stamos. And Dave Coulier. Although my little sister who was a huge fan of that show did complement me once by telling me I was funnier than Bob Saget.

Everybody Loves Raymond--Not me.

My kids liked it. I actually met "Topanga" at The Viper Room, of all places. This was about 2 years ago. I was in LA with some guys on business so we had to hit the strip one night. The Viper Room is great, btw, not nearly the drug-laden den of iniquity I was expecting. Plus I had never seen so many hot chicks in one place in my entire life! Yowza!

Anyway, Topanga comes in thru a side door with her boyfriend, an actor I had seen before but don't know his name (he was "twentysomething Sam" on Sex & the City). They were right up front by the band, she was having a great time, while I was trying to get one of the guys I was with to stay longer. He was just hammered, and was hitting on all the gorgeous women there and getting shot down every time. After a while he was going, "This place sucks! Let's go!" and I'm like, "This place is great! Let's stay all night!", but we did finally leave when the band took a break.

Once outside we turned a corner and--lo and behold--there was Topanga with her group out on the sidewalk! So I went up and introduced myself.

"Hi, you play Topanga, don't you?"

"Yes, hi, I'm Danielle."

"Hi, I'm Ken, nice to meet you! My kids really like your show, they watch it all the time."

"Oh, thanks a lot. We're not doing the show any more, you know."

"Yeah, I know, but the reruns are on all the time."

"Yeah. This is my boyfriend -----" (don't remember his name!) He was wasted, kind of stood there looking stoned.

All of a sudden the drunk guy I was with stumbles up, blaring out, "Who's this? Who's this you're talking to?"

(Me cringing) "This is Topanga!" (him, blank look) "You know, 'Boy Meets World'?" (no comprehension) "The TV show?" (nothing)

"What is that? I've never heard of that!"

"It's a TV show for kids, you've probably never seen it."

"Why the f*** would I want to watch that?"

(Really cringing now) "Okay, we have to go now!"

(Danielle) "You should watch the show sometime"

(Drunk guy) "Hell no, I'm not..."

(Me, pushing drunk guy) "Okay, we've REALLY got to go!"

(Danielle to drunk guy) "I want you to leave!"

(Drunk guy) "No!"

(Danielle) "I want you to GET OUT OF MY FACE!"

At this point there were 3 people pushing on drunk guy and he finally moves down the street. I say "I'm so sorry" to her as we leave and that was that. That guy ruined my beautiful moment with Topanga!

15. In retrospect: Hogan's Heroes....

I liked it as a kid, but how distasteful is it to have a comedy set in a Nazi prisoner of war camp? Especially only 20 years after the end of the war.

That'd be like having "Gitmo!" debut for the fall 2023 line-up.

21. Hogan's Heroes was...

based on "Stalag 17" which was directed by Billy Wilder. Although the film is very grim in general, it has several comedic bits that presage "Hogan's Heroes." I was amazed when I first saw the movie how much humor it has.

22. Can't remember the name...

...but there was a short-lived attempt to do an American version of Fawlty Towers, with Bea ("Maude") Arthur in a gender-switched John Cleese part. It was supposed to be a B&B in Pacific Grove.

A few months before this, Cleese was commenting on the Fawlty Towers phenomenon, and mentioned that it was an example of a comedy show that could never be converted to a U.S. version. And then this show came along and proved him right.

If I can give a nomination to the worst pilot of a sitcom that never got picked up, I'd point to Scamps, starring Bob ("Gilligan") Denver as a goofy single guy running a daycare center, with one of the kids played by Joey Lawrence, who became (in)famous for Blossom several years later. Seriously, folks, this one made The Brady Bunch look like Masterpiece Theatre by comparison. The local NBC affiliate in L.A. aired it (to fill up a time slot for a Lakers game that ended early?), and it was one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen on television. The terrible thing is that, a few months later, I was called in to serve as part of a focus group at NBC to preview a "new" sitcom, and damned if it wasn't the same pathetic show! I still can't forget the grating, sung-by-kids theme song ("He's the champ! With the scamps!") out of my head. On the bright side, at least I was able to score some Tonight Show (during Johnny Carson's heyday) tickets as compensation for having to watch it a second time...
