Calling all techies and the like
I'm trying to get rid of a particularly tenacious piece of viral code from my system. I think it might be a variant of the Nimda virus since my old copy of Norton was reporting it as such.

I can't be absolutely sure though, because the virus prevents Norton's anti-virus scan from running.

So I tried to download manual removal tools from Symantec's website. And here's the kicker...

When I type in "http://symantec.com" or any other anti-virus site, I get an error page since the virus redirects me back to my own system (127.0.0.1) when I try to access the pages.

I finally got some Nimda removal tools running, but none of them detect the virus.

None of the modifications from the Nimda virus have been done on my system either.

I'm stumped, and I thought myself a fair techie.

So... any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. One solution
1. "Back up" the information on your drive(s) except for the operating system.

2. Reformat the disk.

3. Reinstall the operating system.

4. First thing after that, install Norton Anti-Virus or some other top-rated anti-virus system.

5. Copy the backed-up files to the drive. Do not open any of these files under any circumstance!

6. Scan the recopied backed-up files with NAV (or other AV software).

7. Delete all infected files.

You could also call Symantec. They could walk you through a different solution -- if anyone know how to deal with it, they would.

Good luck!

it will give me a good excuse to turn my computer into a Linux system :D

on edit: would you be so kind as to find a number for Symantec, since I can't access their site?

3. Get a pal to download the worm cleaner program
and put it on a floppy. Not sure how big the program is but you might be able to fit it on a boot disk. Boot up off floppy and clean your hard drive that way
