A friend wants to run a VIN check, but is short on cash at the moment. So why is she buying a car? Don't ask me.
So is there a "free" CARFAX-type service out there?

I used it to check a hundred wehicles and then bought one. I'd run it but my time ran out. There must be a DU'ER with a kind heart that'll run one.
