3 Feet of Feces Dug Up in Home of 130 Cats !

MILWAUKEE - Cats were literally coming out of the walls of this south side home.

Last week, Milwaukee police found 130 felines and a dog in house where trash and cat feces was found up to 3 feet deep.

Inspectors came to the house last week after neighbors complained about smells coming from the three-bedroom house. When they arrived, they found the sinks and bathtubs filled with cat food. The cats had crawled into the walls, ducts and ceilings, said Donn Jacobson, an animal control officer for the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.

And scary thing is, that's actuallly a nice neighborhood. If it was about a mile or two north, the cat smells would be competing against the smells of dead bodies.

When will people realize this is the WRONG way to take care of cats?

I'm also surprised the cats didn't gang up and eat the dog. What's the story with the beagle in there?

6. what a disaster

Unfortunately I know some women who are into cat collecting. They do not do it to be cruel or filthy. They do it because otherwise the excess cats will be euthanized. There is very little you can do to convince these women to get rid of the cats or to stop accepting other cats. Some people even victimize these women by coming to them with more cats. After you get into the double digits, people figure you won't mind taking on "just one more." The problem is that the maintenance just gets away from people. One woman has already bought a second house, leaving the cats to destroy the first house she owns. Problem: she has now started gathering more cats at her new house. This can't go on but she doesn't see it. I am not going to call the humane society or the health department, because they would just kill the cats immediately and also cause legal problems for these well-meaning women. I have to assume, while there's life there's hope that these women will voluntarily limit their collecting and their compassion.

But it's tough to watch.

Yes but no one lived in the home

The owner had died in 1997 and the son just kept going back to feed the cats.

And I can appreciate not wanting to take these cats to the humane society where the could possible be put to death. But how about taking there to get them fixed so they're not breeding more cats. According to the articles the cats got into the walls of the home and were using them as breeding nests.

...one of the collectors I know has already abandoned a house to the cats and had to purchase another. At least since she is active in spay/neuter, the cats there are spayed/neutered. But she adds cats through capturing ferals, sigh, or from rescues from cats about to be euthanised at the shelter.

I doubt her son would carry on with the spay/neutering if she passed and I could easily see the breeding nests in the wall scenario. I feel a bit helpless. I've said my piece. This friend and others don't agree. So it isn't my place to interfere.

Yikes, that was a $150,000 home in a decent section of Milwaukee with 2 cars in the garage and the son did nothing since his mother died except show up once in awhile and put catfood in the sink?

I mean he could have sold the home and cars and made a nice little nest egg off of it, but instead he created the worlds largest cathouse (and I don't mean cat "wink wink" house).

8. It makes me wonder what they are going to do

with that house now. I just don't see how it could be cleaned enough for it to be sold. Does anyone know what they do in situations like this? I would think that they would just level the house and sell the lot.

I hate people that hoard hundreds of animals and then they end up being put to sleep because they don't know how to react to human beings because they are feral.

I feel so sorry for all of the cats and the one dog. What the hell was the guy thinking when he started allowing them to breed and go up into the walls.

The conditions that they had to live in was bad enough and now they will have to be put down.
