There I was with my broken German, which did get a little better, and they just LOVED to have an American trying to experience their culture and language. Not once did anyone look down on me for mangling a word or phrase, even the guy on the train back from Budapest who I must have driven crazy asking him to repeat stuff.

Pin Fang China so I could walk around the ruins of Unit 731 and visit the museum there
Murkden China so I could visit the site of the Murkden incident that touched off the Sino-Japanese War

Iiyama (in Nagano prefecture) Japan for the Rape Blossom Festival

I'd love to visit about half of the EU, myself, esp Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Australia seems pretty interesting, and hubby would want me to say Hong Kong for his sake, so I will add that as well. :)

14. EU is sweet but mild

I have spent most of the past 4 years in Europe... living in Germany now.

If you want to snub the freepers go somewhere like Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela or China (N.Korea if possible).

Fly to Cuba through Mexico or Europe.

Then go back to the US and show your friends how wonderful that culture is and why it is not a threat.

I would chose the most expensive destination I'm afraid, something I couldn't do on my own. I can get airfare to France and Germany at derisory prices at some times from Louisiana, in fact, I'll be flying over on one such fare soon.

If someone else was paying, and it was damn the expense, I would pick something that I otherwise couldn't afford.
