I grew up in the Boston area so thats what I have to compare to.

5. I live in Minneapolis, but

although it is probably colder with more snow, Chicago has that WIND and the lake which makes it pretty ridiculous. I still vote for Mpls.

He was stationed there for several BAD winters(record snow fall, weeks below zero)

50. I live in Minneapolis, too,

and it gets damn cold here, but the area is pretty well equipped to deal with the weather. The streets get plowed (though not always as fast as we'd like) and the airport hardly ever closes. I think Chicago seems worse because the dampness makes it feel colder. Actually, the coldest place I've ever personally experienced is Grand Forks, ND, which is really, really cold and really, really windy. Horrible wind chills.

9. Chicago has simultaneously the worst and best weather of all.

It's the only place where the summers are regularly in the 100s and the winters are easily 30 below. Everything can change at an instant.

In a Minneapolis summer its not the heat - its the humidity. 98 degrees with 98% humidity = my own personal hell.

Same can be said for cold and wind chill factor LOL

But at least we no longer measure the snow in feet...like the border of MN and ND.

11. Cleveland

I live in Detroit and it seems at least a couple times a winter, we're on track to get hit by a huge winter storm. But for some reason (the "Lake Effect"?) it goes south of here and Cleveland or sometimes Buffalo get socked.

16. The whole states of Oklahoma and Texas

I'm in Iowa and winters really suck here. It's cold as anything -- the snow sticks around for months. The difference is that Iowans are prepared. We've got snowplows, chains for tires, snow shovels and, most importantly, we've got people who actually know how to go about their business in the snow and ice.

Winters may last a lot longer here, however, any amount of snow and ice was hellish in Oklahoma and Texas. They simply have no flippin' clue.

20. Fargo. Devil's Lake. Places like that.

Not that I don't like Fargo on a good day, but it's very windy there, and when the winter blizzards hit, it's horrible.

29. Duluth is pretty awful in the winter -

Many of the streets are extremely steep and hard to navigate in snow and ice. It's also windy off of Lake Superior.

Duluth has some mighty fine redeeming qualities, though. :)

and having it count as Rochester and Syracuse too because it's all awful....and yet I miss it horribly down here

52. I've have heard that the Syracuse, NY area is way worse

than Maine in the winter. My husband when to Syracuse University and is from Maine, so he can compare the too. I also voted for Buffalo. That area got ten feet of snow in sight of one week a few years ago, I remember.

that 10 footer in Buffalo dropped 9 on Rochester. I have pictures of myself standing next to snowbanks three times my height. It snowed a foot+ a day for a week

28. St Louis - they dont know how to plow

Seriously, we dont get a ton of snow here but we get a couple good storms. And I grew up in Wisconsin, so I know a little about winter weather. But what makes it bad is the MO Dept of Trans. They have NO idea how to prepare for the weather. They dont know how to plow or salt. We had a little ice storm last year and schools were closed for 3 days because the roads were still impassable.

And the drivers! They think they can still drive on this stuff! How many cars do you have to see in the ditch before you wonder whether you should really slow down?

states drive when they get a bit of snow. N. Carolina is the same way...they will get a few ice storms a year and I don't think they know what to do.

snow there is no place to move the cars to clear the streets and alleys. And the sidewalks are so small there is no place to put the snow

Not because of the amount of snow, or even the cold temperatures. Washington, DC has a horrible winter because people in this area freak out when the first flake of snow falls. There do not seem to be many people here who know how to drive in a winter storm, and those same people do not have sense enough to stay home when it's too dangerous for them to drive.

The Washington, DC metropolitan area has some of the worst traffic in the entire U.S.A. when the weather is good. When the weather is snowy, or we have sleet or freezing rain, forget about going anywhere. People here in their big honking SUVs don't realize that 4-wheel drive doesn't mean they can stop faster.
