Bathroom etiquette: PRE-pee handwashing? WTF???
Twice this weekend I saw it: women washing their hands BEFORE entering the stall. One of them DID wash post-pee, but the other went merrily on her way WITH HER STROLLERED BABY!

Somebody explain this, if possible. I've tried to figure it out and the cranium just can't handle the pressure any longer.

:wtf:

1. I sometimes do
I do this if I may have touched something recently that I would want washed off before touching intimate parts of my body: something very dirty, chemicals, or irritating foods like garlic or hot peppers.

2. It's probably based on a song by the Firesign Theatre
We're bringing the war back home
Where it ought to have been before
We're killing the bees
And spiders and flies
And we won't play on ice boxes lying on their sides
We'll wash our hands after wee-wee
And if we're a girl, BEFORE!
And we'll march march march et cetera
'Til we never have to march no more!

15. And I'll bet your booty it won't make a difference
even soap and water don't neutralize hot peppers. I have a garden full of them!

16. But washing won't shift the juice will it?
I always find that my hands are pretty hot for ages after chopping peppers, no matter how many times I wash.

I had to go to the doctor.

5. But this was in the women's room!
I can understand why a male would do it, but, um, it just isn't necessary if it's done properly.

when they go pee? Pull down, sit down, unlax, blot and pull yourself back together.

19. It's not what we touch, ummmm
it's about what other not-so-savory types might touch and leave on the toilet handle or other handles in the bathroom. Must wash before AND after. Otherwise it's too icky to imagine!

12. Reminds me of the old joke...
An officer and a non-com walk into the bathroom together.
After 'doing thier duty', the officer heads for the sinks while the non-com heads for the door.
The officer says "In the Acadamy, we were taught to wash our hands after we relieve ourselves."
The non-com replies "In boot camp, they teach us not to piss on our hands."

13. I may have the answer.
TMI Alert: If one were to use the tampons without applicators, it would involve more extensive touching of sensitive areas than, say, just peeing, or using the applicator kind of tampons. If, hypothetically, I were to use such a product, I would wash my hands pre- and post-.

18. More puzzling - sending text messages at the urinal.....
I've now seen it happen twice - man standing there, flops out the old chap, starts pissing........hand in pocket, pulls out phone and starts sending a text message using both hands.

Very, very odd.

29. Is this a public library lavatory?
'Cause I always wonder what the etiquette was for drug overdoses in them. I've experienced two of them , vicariously.

I told you we could swap stories.

I did work with someone who washed his hands a zillion times a day, and developed some kind of skin condition from it.

30. In these cases, no--we have some way cool lavatories.
They have no doors! The architect designed them so that they are hidden, of course, but you don't need to touch ANYTHING when you leave, so us hand-washers are protected (we also have staff WCs, bless you, Will!)

And of course, every desk has an industrial strength bottle of Purell!

Overdoses? It's an off week if there aren't at least two, I swear.

Don't even get me started on the public service 'puters--eccchhh.

31. I used to like having to wash my hands
after touching the public-use keyboards...and the slime that would somehow form on the terminal screens...

what WAS that slimy substance smeared all over the glass? I also knew some librarians who actually had to wear latex gloves because some of the patrons had a habit of masturbating on some of the books...

Don't even get me started on the used sanitary hygiene items or the syringes in the restrooms...

33. If I have been eating something sticky or
greasy I would want to wash my hands first so that I didn't get my clothing all messy as I am pulling it up or down to get it out of the way so I can attend to business. :eyes: Of course I then wash my hands afterward too. :-)

34. I Wash Before and After
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 03:36 AM by REP
I have a weakened immune system (all diabetics do) and a propensity to get kidney infections. I don't see what's so odd about it. Especially if you are aware of how many surfaces are contaminated with e. coli - like grocery store shopping carts. :puke:

On edit: someone handling a diapered baby should wash their hands frequently! Small children are well-known disease vectors, and one of the largest resevoirs of antibiotic-resistant URIs.
