I rode my recumbent to daily minyan...ask away

A minyan is the quorum of ten people needed for Jewish prayer. I used to go to services everyday after work but along with some other stuff this year I kind of dropped out for awhile. I am getting back into it and since the weather has cooled I decided to ride my bike. The synagogue is not too far from where I live but there are some hills involved as well as traffic.

I am proud of myself that I not only rode it to the synagogue but also back home without walking it at all! I want to continue doing this just to force myself to exercise.

It hasn't taken the bounce out of me though!

I've never ridden a bicycle to a synagogue before. i've always walked or drove.

2. There are two synagogues I would ride my beloved

recumbent to and both of them allow me to bring it inside so it wont be stolen. Unfortunately I wont be able to ride it on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur because I'll be all dressed up. I don't dress up for daily minyan. They are happy to have a warm body just in case someone has to say kaddish.

The rabbis and other congregants get a kick out of it when they see my bike. It shows them that they could ride to shul if they so desired.

Before I started wearing a helmet the Jewish mothers would remind me of the need for a helmet and always asked about it. So, I got a helmet even though I'd rather ride without one.

3. Isn't riding a bicycle...

forbidden on holidays? My memory of exactly what is forbidden where isn't very sharp; I don't follow the majority of those laws anyway.

4. It probably is but I am not orthodox nor

are any of the synagogues I attend. Most people do not live within walking distance so they drive. The rabbi walks but few other people do.

If I were orthodox I don't think I'd be allowed to ride a bike since I am female. Bike riding is not seen as a modest activity.
