Did you know a few years ago Colorado passed Amendment 2. Do you know what that was all about? Well - the good people of Colorado decided they didn't want gays and lesbians to have any rights in Colorado. So they passed Amendment 2 - which took away any legal recourse they had against discrimination. If they were unfairly fired they had no way of fighting it. Housing discrimination? Too bad. Yes - the good people of the great state of Colorado did that. Not even Texas has done anything that horrendous. The Amendment was eventually overturned - thank god.

There is blood on everyones hands - not just Texas.

7. I go to Dallas once a month

I live in Oklahoma (and will be moving REAL soon). Anyhow, most of the people I have ran into have been ok but not great. Most people in small town Texas are really nice until I got to talking with them and realized that they have nothing in common with me and support the things that I don't so much like in America. Like the death penalty, no sex education, integration of church and state, and that isn't even touching the hatred for 'liberals'. I am sure that there are people in Texas that aren't that way but the overwhelming majority of them are. And while political affiliation doesn't mean much to most people, I just can't stand being around that.

Especially about Tex Mex. As many times as I have been there - Never had Tex Mex. I have had some incredible Greek food and Italian food.

You want unhealthy? Come to Colorado and have Chicken Fried steak. Or Mexican made with Lard.

I just think it's terrible to throw away a whole state. Texas is beautiful. And the people - while they may differ politically - they are nice homey folk.

And if political differences are going to keep you from knowing people - you are gonna miss out on knowing some wonderful people.

9. I'm a native Texan and I miss living there

but I also like living in the small town in Oklahoma I live in.

I miss good Mexican food and good barbecue (here they put relish on their barbecue sandwiches).

I miss bluebonnets in the spring and the city closing down when the bridges get icy. (I've lived in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio..they all close down)

I miss being able to drive 70 in a 60 mph zone because most of the cops in Texas understand how long it takes to get anywhere in Texas so they don't ticket you unless you're not going with the flow.

I miss the newspapers more than I ever thought I would.

I miss the hill country and the Gulf.

I miss the good people of Texas and there are a lot of them there.

Darn, now I'm homesick!

And the "Fattest city in the US" isn't fat because of tex-mex, it's the least tex-mex city in Texas. There are a variety of Texas cuisines, from the panhandle dead cow cuisine to the Austin tex-mex-meets-California-in-a-vegetarian-friendly-sort-of-way cuisine. I'm a low-fat vegetarian, and tex-mex is perfect for me.

Remember the Alamo isn't too popular a slogan in Austin, anyway. We are the party of Henry B Gonzales and Henry Cisneros as much as the party of Ralph Yarborough and Ann Richards. Watch Lone Star, the greatest movie ever about Texas IMO, to understand why that slogan just doesn't work anymore.

Never surrender is more the spirit, though personally, I'm getting sick of any slogan or motto that has to do with war or aggresion. "Remember the people" might be a better slogan. "Keep the focus," "Keep the eye on the prize," "Don't stop thinking about tomorrow," "We shall overcome," "We shall prevail..." Stuff like that.

I'm getting tired of calls for politicians with spines or balls. Too many of our leaders have balls, if you know what I mean, and as for spines, they make a person stiff and unflexible.

We keep protesting violence, yet we keep using the language of violence. There's a reason people think we are confused.

Smilin' Ralph, The People's Senator, from 1957 - 1970. Voted for every civil rights bill he had the chance to. Voted against every Viet Nam bill he had the chance to. Originated the phrase "Great Society," which LBJ stole from him. Sponsored three national parks (Big Thicket, Gaudalupe Mountains and Padre Island), sponsored the first bilinqual education bill, sponsored a lot of veterans' benefits bills. Defeated GHW Bush for the senate in 1964, in a campaign where John Wayne attacked Ralph. Finally lost in 1970 to Lloyd Bentsen, the choice of the money Democrats in Texas, when Bentsen teamed up with GHW Bush in the primaries to launch a barage of slanders against Ralph, in what would become the standard method of campaigning for all Bush family members over the next few decades. Those slanders claimed Ralph was a communist, and one showed a split-screen image of Ralph on one side and Ho Chi Min on the other, with the accusation that Ralph was Ho's best friend in Washington. Some Texans took that literally, and Ralph lost.

One other less happy claim to fame for Ralph. He was in the motorcade the day JFK was assassinated. Ralph loved JFK, and they were close friends in the Senate. Afterwards, although Yarborough was completely convinced Oswald had shot Kennedy, he championed the push for a new Commission to investigate the assassination. He always said he was sure Oswald was the shooter (as was everyone else in the motorcade) but he refused to answer when asked if anyone had put Oswald up to it.

He was Wellstone before Wellstone was, though he became chair of the Banking and Ways and Means Committee, wielding so much power that the committee was broken up when Ralph lost.

Just thought people should know. I had the honor of working for him a couple of years before his death in the mid 90s. Great man.

37. I went there for my first time this past summer

I have met a few people from Texas and went to visit one in August. My thoughts on Texas is, it's just another part of the country. I only spent a few days there, but I saw nothing that was appealing enough to stay there.
The fact is, until I really started to talk to the people from Texas I had always thought the Civil War was over. The person I know down there is not the only one I have met and I have been called a Yankee more in the last few years than in the 36 years previous to that.
As for the food, give me New Orleans or Memphis any day over the food I had in Texas. I always thought they were known for their beef. I went to a steakhouse down there and I can get a better steak up here at the super market. I went to a "famous" catfish place down there, and it wasn't even close to the buffet style places I went to in Memphis.
I can take or leave the place, but it doesn't really appeal to me. I guess I would rather stay a Yankee.

There's a restaurant in Amarillo called "The Big Texan" that features a 72-ounce stak dinner - if you can eat the whole thing within the allotted time, it's fee.

The Hill Country below Dallas/Fort Worth is beautiful.

The people we met there were very friendly - even the folks in the souvenir shop in Crawford. (One transplanted asshole does not destroy an entire town, ya know...)

Many of the smaller towns are downright cute, with their ornate courthouses on the town square.

And we have friends there, including a childhood friend of mine who lives in the Dallas area.

Sure, Texas has given us Tom DeLay and Phil Gramm. But it also gave us Dr Pepper, Sam Rayburn, LBJ, Ann Richards, Molly Ivers and Buddy Holly & The Crickets.

All things considered, I love the Lone Star State. :-)

I went down there after living in Decatur, Illinois, my hometown, all of my life.

Dallas is the most REPUBLICAN city in the United States. No culture, no arts. Just big, glass, shiny buildings dedicated to making money. Yes, all cities have that. But it's balanced by character. Chicago has a lot of character...interesting history and architecture. But, Dallas...rich snotty Republican yuppies. Oh...it's the first city I've ever been to where NO ONE jaywalks. that is the problem. It is cultural. I have been all over Texas in the last 15 years, and blatant racism, homophobia, and xenophobia ARE a consistant problem I experience with every visit. Yes, it exists in many, many other places -- too many other places. Heck, I saw it in CO, where I was spit at by a some guy because I was wearing a pink mohawk back in the 80s.

Coming from San Francisco it is a culture shock for me to see so many intolerant people in one place.

Frankly, if I didn't have close family in Texas, I wouldn't choose to visit.

Things to like:

+ Hello? No one has mentioned Molly Ivins yet?
+ Sam Elliott (my SO has given me a "get out of relationship free" card if I ever meet Sam Elliott - although I doubt Katherine Ross would agree to it)
+ Ann Richards
+ King of the Hill (maybe not from Texas, but about Texas)
+ cowboy hats and cowboy boots
+ The nice Texan at the Grand Canyon who took the picture of my SO and I that we're using on our Christmas card, and didn't make a smart comment about the cowboy hat on my Yankee head clashing with my Kerry button

Things not to like:
- The restaurant selection in Dallas and Houston - especially the 'burbs, which are chain chain chain chain chain chain
- "Don't Mess With Texas" on everything and anything sold as a souvenir. Grrrr.
- the fact that the natives think of themselves as Texans first and Americans second -> you NEVER see a US flag w/o a Texas flag next to it. I'm sure they would fly the Texas flag on top if it were allowed.
- That restaurants have to put up a sign saying "no guns allowed" (!!!)

One place I worked at flew the flags at equal level and got a few complaints occasionally, until it was explained that it is part of our state Constitution and/or part of our statehood agreement.

But I have a Texas flag hanging in the living room of my house here in CA, and not a US flag to be seen anywhere. Sorry, it's unexplainable.
