Gordon Jump of WKRP fame has died

LOS ANGELES -- Gordon Jump, who played a befuddled radio station manager on the sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati" and made his mark in commercials as the lonely Maytag repairman, died Monday. He was 71.

Jump suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, said his cousin, Katherine Jump Wagner. The illness causes scarring of the air sacs of the lungs, leading to heart or respiratory failure.

...was when the Big Guy was sitting at his desk with nothing to do, spied the pen set on his desk, grabbed it and started spinning around making machine gun noises.

9. There was never another show that could touch that one.

A perfect cast, incredible writers, all done at the perfect time. By the end, they had given Gordon's part a lot of subtle, hidden depth.

I'll miss him as much as I miss WKRP.

Did you know that both Gordon Jump and Gary Sandy (Andy Travis on 'KRP) were actually from Dayton? I think that was a big part of the reason the show was so authentic -- at least two of the cast members knew what Cinci radio was like.

Sorry to see him go -- he kept working right up through the '90s. He even has a credit for a small role last year. Rest in peace, Big Guy.

22. Does anyone remember -

the episode when Venus Flytrap turned himself in for desertion from the Army? Despite his angry disapproval Mr. Carlson, a WWII vet, went with him to the hearing at the Army base. That one really moved me.

At one point, the Big Guy was on the air calming down a young girl who called in to the station because she was scared. And he calmed her down.

To me, that scene showed the depth of Gordon Jump's acting talent. He was perfect in that part.

Thinking of Mr. Carlson trying to level his office blinds...

One side's too high, than the other, then the first one...

eventually, with a mighty, frustrated tug, he yanks too hard on the cord, and sends the whole blind hurtling out the window, to the street below, just as an astounded Andy enters the office...

Mr. Carlson: "Well, what do YOU want, dammit?!"


OMG, just thinking about his physical comedy makes me laugh out loud.
