Recommend some music to me...

I'm looking for some good mope rock or emo rock or punk or whatever. I generally like post-grunge bands and generally rock bands from the early and mid 90s (i.e. Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, etc.).

I'm just in one of those down moods where I have to listen to as much emo or mope rock as possible, and i'm looking for something new now. Anyone got any suggestions?

Edit: Also, recommend to me like I was born yesterday. I may have only heard of a really popular band, but never bothered to check them out...

Edit (Again): Basically what i'm looking for something that appeals to my teen angst a little bit...

Great hard rocking group. Female lead/bassist named Johnette Napolitano. True Renaissance woman. Tough, tender, angry, needy, cynical, innocent, smart.

Incredible music. Try the albums 'Bloodletting', 'Mexican Moon', and 'Walking In London'.

and if you want sad, heart-breakingly bitter and oh so well sung, check out their first album. i think it's untitled/selftitled, and it's got the best song she ever sang on it (actually i love every song on that album)

for real punk sounds, the "hyena" album by sioxie and the banshees is really great. "swimming horses" in particular.

Their first album is perfect for your mood (self-titled). "Dance Along the Edge" will ease you through it . . . and it's a beautiful song besides.

11. I'd say Joy Division

Ordinarily, when someone asks for mope rock I say "Smiths" but considering your musical inclinations, I assume you'd enjoy the darker and more heavy, mechanical sound of Joy Division, specifically there first album, or if you want a primer, buy "Permanent, 1995" or "Substance." I think you'll dig the sound. Very dark.

We'll Make The Roads By Walking is easily the best album released so far this year. Go download the tracks "Four Years In Five Lives" and "We Are All Collateral Damage". Off their first record, get "Training Wheels or No Hands" and "F.orever A.ngry at M.y I.nner L.ove for Y.ou"

also You and I, the band that was before The Assistant. Get "143", "Tell Me About Your Childhood" and "Seascape" Both bands are basically REALLY REALLY heavy emo.

14. Oh, you should hit on some older alternative..

Sisters of Mercy are great, their music is a gothic, early metal, club mix of sorts, just kind of have their own sound. They have a compilation out called "A Slight Case of Overbombing" , my fav song is "This Corrosion" or The Smiths, dark music set to pop tunes, always lifts my spirits, my fav song is "Bigmouth Strikes Again."

20. When in Roam (aka The Vote), The Can Utility, Analena

The Vote It's a side project of Philly punk band Violent Society. VS is more of a street punk type but The Vote is a bit more on the emo side of things but I'm using the emo term very loosely here. They have some mp3s you can check out on the site.

Another excellent band is Richmond Va's Can Utility. They too have a few tracks for download on their site. Actually just listened to them again for the first time in awhile and forgot how good they are.

Last but not least on my most highly recommended list is Croatia's Analena. They've been one of my favorite bands for about 3 years now. Unfortunately their mp3s are at mp3.com but they are good enough to wade through that site's crap to get to. They do have a video available for direct download. They have a girl singer with one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard, she is just amazing.

22. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Dark, at times vaguely gothic post-punk. Cave is a brilliant lyricist, right up there with Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, in my book. Albums I'd recommend: "Murder Ballads", "Let Love In", "Tender Prey".

For something a little more in the teen-angst vein try Nine Inch Nails. "Pretty Hate Machine" is brilliant, so is "The Fragile", "The Downward Spiral"...

Also: Depeche Mode. Particularly "Violator".

More: The Smiths. Morrissey solo.

For something a lot less rock-oriented but still chock-full o' angst, Ministry's "The Land of Rape and Honey". (avoid it if you don't like industrial).

Soul Coughing. "Ruby Vroom". Brilliant. "Irresistable Bliss" was pretty good, too, and so was "El Oso" (shame they broke up).

Then there's the Bristol sound/downbeat/trip-hop stuff from the '90's, which is quite good and frequently somewhat depressing: Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, Lamb...

I could recommend a lot more, but I've gone a little afield from what you're looking for already and I suspect I'd only go further, so I'll stop here.

23. For a great downer, try American Music Club

Specifically Mercury or or Everclear, two fantastic albums.

Bonus: Apology for an Accident, track 9 from Mercury, is the closest thing to 'mope rock' Las Vegas ever got. Indescribably good.
