P.S. I did live in a red state for a couple of years -- Nevada, which isn't so much red as it is generally apolitical. The repukes win all the time because very few people care about the issues half as much as they care about strip-mining, the quality of horse feed, keeping the well pipes open when it's 16 below, knowing which local band will be playing at Bordertown this weekend, and being able to find a reasonably-priced gun-repair shop.

Nevada: A nice place to live, but you wouldn't want to vote there.

We elected a Dem Senator and legislative majority PLUS initiated a Renewable Energy Initiative calling for 10% renewables by 2015.

I don't know more than 2 people from my hometown who are red.

I've lived in Connecticut since I was 15. I'm rather content with being in a blue state. I figure that I already did my "time". :D

It's a city of about a 1/2 million people, so there's a lot of variety of cultures and people. My dad was active in Democratic politics especially in law school and just after (graduated from U of N in '70) and we last lived in a more progressive part of the city rather than suburbia so much (Dundee, not sure what's it's like now though). Both my parents were active in disability rights and advocacy so I me at lot of progressive people as a kid. Even a number of openly gay people.

However, I also went to Catholic schools and dealt with some pretty messed up philosophies. (I had a teacher in 8th grade who said, "The reason why bombing abortion clinics is wrong is because those abortionist sinners aren't worth going to jail for.") The rest of Nebraska outside of Omaha or Lincoln is pretty much WASPy, red state Hell and there's too much football, but there's pockets of good stuff if you know where to look. Omaha has some very good restaurants and cultural activities as well.

and honestly, Lincoln and Omaha suffer bad reputations that they really don't deserve. Lincoln is actually blue (mostly due to the large university) and entire sections of Omaha are quite liberal (google search state senator Ernie Chambers for proof).

I've had friends (some from blue states) visit recently and they all were shocked at how nice Nebraska is. Comments included "Wow, your cities are actually big!" "You know, it's pretty here...", etc. The cities are like any other similarly sized city. We've got the same stores, the same restaurants. It's really quite normal.

I will admit that anything outside of these 2 cities is totally creepy. Even as a life-long Nebraskan, I don't like leaving the Omaha-Lincoln I-80 corridor. ;) I won't pretend that Nebraska is a fabulous place to live, but it's not god-awful either.

Believe me, we tried here in Florida. Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade are solidly blue. When you live in Palm Beach County, you tend to forget that the rest of the state is filled with ignorant redneck yokels.
