£28,000 ($53,787) truffle rots in fridge
The world's most expensive truffle has fallen victim to its own celebrity.

The huge fungus, weighing almost 2lb, was excavated from the hills of Tuscany and sold for £28,000 to a syndicate said to include the actress Gwyneth Paltrow. But it has now been declared inedible after being displayed for too long.

Enzo Cassini, the manager of the Knightsbridge restaurant Zafferano, which organised the sale of the white truffle for charity, was in mourning yesterday.

"This was the Pope of all truffles," he lamented. "We did not intend to keep it on display as long as we did but people insisted on seeing it."

13. Quick! Put it up for sale on eBay!
Encase it in Lucite and sell it as a paperweight!

16. The truffle or the dog poo?
If it's the truffle, the rotting probably had something to do with it.

If it's the dog poo, well, that's only to be expected.

5. well, it did support the truffle's finder
And by extension probably the whole village - not exactly starving, but it is not like the money vanished.

Terrible waste anyway.

12. You don't have to. Just pick them out of your garden.
Put them on a bed of lettuce for a few days to clean them out, then cook them. You should also check to make sure they're the common garden snail, not some weird poisonous variety. ;)
