Actually, my doc has asked me not to drink for a few months while I heal from my surgery, so when I go out, I buy drinks for friends and just sip on water for myself.

you'd looooove Raki, the Turkish version of the same drink. Gawd, I had some rough nights on Raki. I remember chugging about a half pint of the stuff at this beach resort on a bet from this BBC cameraman. I feel queasy just remembering. Like blueberry paint thinner.

I just hit the ouzo pretty good 2 nights ago. I never have alcohol-induced amnesia, except for when I drink Ouzo. I have to have it ice cold, neat (so you can see the little ice crystals).

Is raki anise flavored, too?

raki, arak, pastiche (?), ouzo, sambuca-all anise. Absinthe is in the same family, just with thujone (wormwood oil) added.

Funny, tho; the further south you go in Europe, the dryer the liquor becomes.

I also enjoy the herbal distillations including Chartreuse (have to special order it here) and something we called Becher Bitter (Bechorovka) when I was growing up in Germany.

15. Flaming sambuca..

One year at a staff x-mas party the big boss decided to buy everyone a flaming sambuca.. Pretty well you fill a shot glass with sambuca and light it on fire.. you then chug it back with the flames going..

one girl was very hesitant of doing it and let it burn to long so the shot glass was super hot when she picked it up.. she panicked and tried to drink it but spilled it all over her face which then went up in a quick burst and the smell of burnt hair.. she was not really burnt bad but they took her to the hospital just to be safe... boy oh boy, the boss felt like a complete idiot.

17. Three beans was the rule I thought.

Here's my recipe, which I got from a friend who's family is Italian and as we say......"connected".

Take a brandy snifter or sherry glass and fill it with hot water. Place a coaster over the top to keep it nice and warm. Leave for about a minute.

Remove the coaster and pour the water out and immediately put a couple of shots of Sambuca in the warm glass.

Put 'three' coffee beans, no more, no less in the Sambuca and enjoy.

The story goes that if you're served Sambuca with any other number of coffee beans than three, it's bad luck. Sicilian style.

But sometimes your hand slipped and four beans went in. That's the point at which I was told an odd number was OK.

16. My favourite from this family of liquor is Ricard (from France)

Not sure if it's sold (or has been boycotted!!!) in the US. It's the same as Pernod, only it's 45% alcohol by volume instead of 40%. This fact alone means IT'S VERY DANGEROUS to smoke cigs (or other) while you're drinking it or YOUR FACE COULD EXPLODE.

Somebody mentioned absinthe...my absolute fave alcohol in the whole world BUT ONLY IF BOUGHT IN EUROPE. North America only imports pale imitations.

18. had real absinthe..

for the first time last weekend.. it was from europe. it is a big procedure to drink it..

first you put a sugarcube on a spoon, then pour the absinthe on to the spoon.. light it on fire.. let it burn for a bit, then dump it into a glass..

at least that is how my friend did it.
