Poll question: Rhythmic sounds at bedtime, soothing or maddening?

When you hear a rhythmic sound, like the beat from a neighbor's music, a dripping faucet, or a ticking clock, does it help you sleep or drive you nuts and keep you up?

1. I listen to Sublime's 'Lincoln Highway Dub' to go to sleep a lot.

it's an all instrumental song, very relaxing.

2. I can't stand any kind of rhythmic sounds at bedtime.

I can handle traffic sounds or a train going past, but if it has a beat, it drives me bananas.

I know others who can sleep with music or the TV on - I can't stand it.

4. There are some rythmic sounds

that I look forward to. I can't say, however that they help me sleep, at least not immediately.

5. Depends on what it is

The humming of a computer I find very soothing. Music I can always drift off to. The sound of ocean waves or a running brook is nice.

The bouncing of the bed in the next motel room is very annoying, however. A dripping faucet drives me batty. The droning hum of my old refrigerator used to keep me awake often. So it depends.

BUT, I have tinnitus and I find it impossible to sleep without music or a movie going on.

9. I can't sleep without a fan.

The bigger the better. I need it summer and winter. The best provides a not of noise and gale-force wind. And it has to be blowing about a foot away from my face. I don't care if it's the middle of January and it causes me to freeze to death, I gotta have it. I don't care if it consume half the power of the Wolf Creek Power Plant, I can't live without it. You wouldn't believe how much I have to pay my wife in terms of relationship capital to keep it powered up through the night.

11. What happens if you have no fan?

Do you break out in sweats? You sure there's no health issue there?

I've never heard of someone needing a fan on their face in winter!

12. I take it with me when I travel.

Twenty five years ago, when I was a college senior I had an interview with DuPont in WV. I stayed in a hotel the night before a full day of interviewing, but w/o a fan I didn't get to sleep until about 3:00 am. During my last interview of the day, while sitting there in my three-piece suit, I dozed off in the middle of a conversation with a guy. He was telling me something one second, and the next thing I knew, he was sitting there staring at me as if he was waiting for an answer to a question. I didn't get a job offer from DuPont. Ever since I take a fan with me everywhere. If my wife gets up in the middle of the night I never hear her. But if she tries to turn off the fan, I usually wake up after a few minutes.
