i want to switch my mom to (dem) dish network.

anyone have dish and can help me on this one? the upshot is it looks like for $40 direct tv offers about 200 channels and for the same amount i think dish has only 120. does that sound right?

the downshot:
my mom wants to trade out from time warner cable and wants to go to direct tv. she had direct tv a few yrs ago and still has the small dish attached to the house. looking at their website it looks quite easy to switch over. you can easily find what channels you get with each package and how much it costs

given that i am not plugged into the world at large, i didnt know dish network was dem. until reading it here.
unfortunately their website is not so easy to use, so i cant get a handle on if i can make a good argument for her to go with dish instead of direct tv.

shes republican so i cant use the line about political affiliations. i dont think that would be a winning argument

so can anyone tell me their experience with this or where i can find good information about what dish network offers (besides the official website)?

ps of course i would like to call a local place and ask them the specifics but she and i dont live anywhere near each other which is usually a good thing.

shes really sweet actually and i would like to "guide" her on this without her knowing why direct tv is now not such a good idea.

1. I'm curious about switching, too.

I currently have DirecTV. My hubby is reluctant. I'm going to get an estimate on the switch anyway. I think that I might have to purchase a new dish.

2. I had a couple threads on this within the last week.

Maybe it's one we should put in Demopedia.

There were mostly good reviews. Some did say they experienced problems during bad weather. Someone said that they use to work for one of the satellite dish companies and recommended Rain-X.

We'll probably be getting it before the end of the month.

from what i had seen on the dish website, the initial cost was much more than direct tv but that may be incorrect.
and as you say, there should probably be some special deal if you want to switch

3. I thought dishes were dishes and that it is the receiver you have to

shell out for, along with packaging?

Anyway, they are so in competition with each other, they sometimes offer deals to folks who are switching over.

6. My boyfriend has Dish and loves it

It has hundreds of channels -- you can get packages for whatever you prefer. Lots of foreign language channels with international news, Free Speech TV, Link TV, BBC, etc., etc. Reasonably priced too (at least in the L.A. area).

8. that sounds good. but i think its going to cost a good deal more to

get started with dish than it does direct tv. even if she hadnt already had direct tv it looks like they charge more to get started, plus the packages - from what i could get from their website - cost as much but you get less.
