Poll question: DUers: how old are you?

While some people are born "old souls" and some seniors are still very much "young at heart," our age probably does affect our take on politics, entertainment, fashion, maybe even religion. And, let's face it, our pivotal experiences at important stages in our lives affect our thinking and feeling, hopes and dreams, fears and worries. It'll be fun to see how age shakes out here in DU-land. (For a little added fun, before you respond to the poll, take a guess: what's our average age?)

And that is a beautiful thing. No one knows how old you are, your background, your sex, your ethnicity. There are people who just have to know these things or they can't deal with other people. Their agendas are usually not very healthy or constructive.

We are all just human beings here. It is a thing of wonder and beauty.

I think I will start a poll -"what color are your shoes?" - that should tell us a lot.

Especially coming from someone with so few posts here. Asking the age of posters here, including teenagers, opens the door for anyone to obtain personal types of information on youngsters who may frequent this forum. Don't tell I'm an alarmist, either -- I've seen it firsthand on other fora. Friendly banter leading to some posters, especially young ones, revealing more about themselves than they should to a helluva lot of people they don't know from Adam.

14. "20-29" is an absurd demographic. It goes from people

fresh out of high school and in university through to people who are established in their careers and in positions of seniority. Completely different situations. It should split in the mid or early 20s.

I'm 26.

When I was 21, I was a university student.

When I was 22, I was given my first full-time job on a weekly business magazine.

When I was 23, I was made section editor and the word "senior" was added to my job title.

When I was 24, I became chief of my desk on a new magazine. I was third in command. I had four people under me. Things I did were mentioned in trade journals. My head swelled and swelled.

When I was 25, I burned out. I couldn't take it. I became very ill for a while. I quit my job and went freelance. Now I earn much less money and I am so much happier. I love it.

I think there's a lot of young people out there who really didn't like Kerry or Bush this time around. Maybe Kucinich would appeal greatly to these people, because I know (at least from those that I talked to) people really felt that way about Ralph Nader this time around. They want another option.

I look back on my life so far, and it looks to me like we've been on one wild ride. When I was born, DDE was prez. I was 13 when I watched JFK's funeral. 15 when Vatican II ended in the Catholic church. 18 when we laid RFK and MLK to rest. Spent some time in solitary confinement for protesting Vietnam when I was 20. Some tough years, but I sensed the country was on a roll. Feminism, civil rights, even grey panthers! But then Watergate, Irancontra, Clinton's impeachment, 2000, 2002, and now 2004. And I'm thinking: we're in one serious hole here. And we could use all the help we can get, from every age. LOTS of us know we can fight back. I have a dream that the "dispute" over this election will become a roaring fire.

61. I'm 21 and a bit of an old soul

I feel like I've witnessed and participated in far more of American politics than I physically could have.

I often think of the great political figures of the past sixty years or so as if I remember them personally. I have to remind myself that my own range of events is pretty limited to the past decade.

Maybe it's embedded in the American collective unconscious, or just a manifestation of hundreds of hours of studying and multimedia. Or most likely of all, I am feeling the weight of the experience and conscience of my old hippy parents and grandparents, who told me extensively about their lives as progressives in turbulent times.

That distribution would almost pass the Kosmogorov test for normality. (Well maybe not Kosmogorov since there are far too few responses. Probably Wilkes, though.)

Also, the distribution almost neatly fits the overall shape of the U.S. population age distribution.

Interesting, huh? (OK maybe not.) Yeah, i know, but i'm a statistics geek. What else would you expect me to say?
