I just finished reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray"
What a strange book. Its hard for me to imagine it was written so long ago.ANyone know if theres a decent version of the movie out there?I've heard they have made many awful versions of this film.

Anyway, I've said before & I'll say it again. Oscar Wilde was ahead of his time.Born 100 years to early. What a great story!

3. The film version made in 1944 with Hurd Hatfield and Angela
Lansbury, was actually quite good. It was in black-and-white except for the scenes where the portrait is displayed, which are in color. Effective dramatic device. Angela Lansbury was a babe when she was younger! Never knew that until I saw this film.

Some of the dialogue is not from the book, but was cribbed from "The Importance of Being Earnest" and some of Wilde's other plays.

4. I heard about this version as well
George Sanders is in it as well. I know they did a version in England a few years ago which had almost non-stop male nudity & I heard it was more "Inspired"by Dorian Gray than the actual story, (even though it was called "The Picture of Dorian Gray"by Oscar Wilde)

I also didn't know this book was used against Wilde in court regarding his homosexulaity. How lame! Its a great book!Have any schools banned it in fear it would create young men to turn gay?

5. A wonderful book, arguably full of more wise and witty sentences
then anything else written in English. Writers of English tend to go for the wise, or the witty. It is a marvel of a book in its accomplishment. I LOVE OSCAR WILDE.

On the more despairing side is his De Profundis (wise with a touch of self-pity), written in prison to the ungrateful brat Lord Alfred Douglas.

I have seen a few movies based on this work, none that I could recommend.

6. I like the old black and white one made in the ???40's I think.
Geo. Sanders is in it but not the star. I do not know the star but he is a looker for the time.
