Why can't we have a word filter? My eyes will burn from all the profanity!

It bothers me that, unlike the more civil FreeRepublic, DU doesn't use a word filter to conceal the bad language.

So why don't we have a little filter script that changes all mentions of f*ck and f--k to FUCK, all "f'n"s to "FUCKING"s, all "sh*t"s to "SHIT"s?

it's because along with the free exchange of ideas comes the freedom to choose our own words. Sometimes a word deemed profane is the most appropriate word choice for what the speaker is trying to convey. Profanity, used sparingly and judiciously, is an excellent tool for making a point.

Do I like excessive use of the "f" word? No, not really, but I'm only in favor of censoring my own word use and not the word use of others. If I find certain posts peppered with too much profanity, I can choose to move along and read something else.

I don't like a lot of restrictions on language. I prefer that people be allowed to decide for themselves what they want to say and how they want to say it.

I am 55, and I do NOT use the bad language, but if otghers do....Oh well :) I am not the "word-police"..

My only caveat, is that I wish the "salty" language would NOT be in the subject lines....because we never know whose Grandma might be finally getting around to checking out our site, and migth be immediately turned off when she visits the Latest or Home page..

when they used to bleep the bad words out of TV, now its either replace them with people that don't sound like the actors or worse, silence them. What I find funny is when they get the timing wrong and you hear "Shit"(silence/bleep before/afterwards), now that's funny!
