Hi there. I'm mostly a lurker on these forums, but today I felt the need to post something.
I own an anime collection. A large anime collection. I have about a hundred DVDs, and it's always growing.
I also go to school at Brigham Young University Idaho. Yes, I know, it's a hotbed of conservatism. I am not a conservative (obviously), and have learned to get along with most of the republicans around campus. I am an active, practicing Mormon, and find no conflict between my political beliefs and my religious beliefs (consequently, I'd appreciate it if people would refrain from Mormon bashing).
The problem is, this school has an honor code. I signed an agreement to abide by this honor code. One of the clauses in the honor code says that I should not watch any R, NC-17 or X rated movies. I do not have a problem with this - I don't watch those anyway, and I don't like pornography.
However, somebody reported to the dean of students that I own pornographic anime. And so, I was summoned to the dean's office to talk with him about the subject. I suppose somebody saw a brief scene while passing by my apartment window that could have been construed as sexually suggestive.
Of course, I own no pornographic anime. Yes, there are some things that could be considered suggestive, but like I said, I don't like pornography. Why would I own any of it?
Anyway, the dean spent most of the time trying to get a confession out of me. I confessed nothing, of course. He's also asking my roommates about it (two of my roommates share my interest in anime, but don't have a large collection like I do). Unfortunately, the honor code also says that I should not have anything sexually suggestive regardless of how it's rated. That's something I disagree with (it's subjective what is and isn't suggestive), but wasn't really aware of when I first entered this school.
I've never had a problem with this before, but I'm not the only student who has had a problem with the enforcement of the honor code at this school (a few of my friends have had run-ins with them before).
I'm not sure what I should do at this point. I need to find a way to resolve this without causing more problems with the school administration. But really, I feel as though I'm under a microscope. What's worse is that I've seen NOBODY summoned to the dean's office for owning even more questionable live action material, such as James Bond movies. Heck, most network TV is cruder than any anime I have.
I'm very upset about this.
