OK, Who Here Had a Chevy Vega?
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 04:45 PM by CO Liberal
I had a '73 Hatchback - red with white stripes and a red interior. 4-speed stick. My first wife got custody of it and the kids when we separated. The Vega was dead within a year, because she never bothered to check the oil until the light came on.......

5. Ah, the famous "water balloon on wheels"
Once I was out with a friend in his mom's Mercedes-Benz. Two clowns in a Pacer... ...excuse me, a Pacer X decided they wanted to drag race us. They were properly dusted by the Mercedes.

9. Hey, I fit 8 people in my car one time
It was my first car and I loved it.

Steve Marriott offered to buy it off of my one time when I was a kid and I told him no way. Boy was I dumb!

2. I helped destroy one in high school
It belonged to the mom of a "friend" (read: fellow gang member) of mine. We used it for cruising and as a getaway car for our more nefarious activities, all of which are now well past applicable statutes of limitations.

3. My Brother Did
The oil pressure switch wouldn't stay in and kept killing the engine until you pushed it back in. Come to think of it, a friend had one and called me to fix his heater one fall day; turned out he was about out of anti-freeze and nothing was circulating through the heater core.

4. I had an orange one!
It had a refabricated floor, The old one was virtually rusted out.
I wasn't capable of breaking speed limits. One day a telephone poll stepped out in front of it. Totalled!

10. Sky Blue was the most popular color...
with a black interior. I had such a vehicle. The Vega was doomed at that start. It used an experimental engine block of silicon-impregnated steel with an aluminum alloy piston. The intent was for the dissimilar metals to "etch themselves into a proper bore surface" and they did nothing of the kind. I replaced the engine in mine 2 times at Chevy’s expense then demanded a replacement car. I was given a Fiat 128 wagon that I took to Europe for 3 years with little trouble. Chevy, and I am a current Corvette owner, has never made a good car (perhaps with the exception of the 1957 convertible). The US auto industry was pure carp in the 70's and seems to be going back in that direction.

I had a '73 GT hatchback. Bought it in college back in '91. Paid $400 for it, and it only had 34,000 miles.

Loved that car. It was originally gold, but I painted it black with a neon blue stripe down the middle. People told me it looked like a squished Camaro. It certainly wasn't the fastest car on the road, but it was unique and a blast to drive.

I sold it to a friend after college and he proceeded the warp the oh-so-fragile aluminum block. He somehow jammed a 305 into the damn thing and sold it for $2500.

One of the many cars I wish I could get back.

11. 77, yellow.
Actually, my Dad got it for my younger sister when I was away at college, and I inherited it from her, complete with Jebus bumper stickers.

It was pretty much a pile of junk when I got rid of it in 85.

12. Mine was green
It was my first car. Got it in '77. Green hatchback, '72 or '73, I forget. Three cylinders actually worked on it. Had a top speed of something like 65 mph, but I couldn't go that fast because it made too much noise.

My parents wouldn't let me take it to college, and then sold it while I was away. (Grrrr.)

Can't say I miss it, since my second car was a '76 Chrysler Cordoba and a lot more fun.

15. '73 Hatchback here
My first car. I don't remember what they called the color, but it was a dark reddish bronze metallic. Three speed stick, black vinyl interior with NO A/C!!! But I loved that car. My monthly car payment was $55.00. I could drive all week on $5 worth of gas.

16. Well, my daughter was conceived in one.
The Vega was as reliable and as dependable as her dad.
