these days is that Prussia was offically outlawed after the war. The annexation of large parts of Swabia, Franconia and the Palatinate also have created a Bavaria that looms larger than it really should. Only with the death of the Prussian colosus could Bavaria come to be viewed as strong.

From the Prussian perspective Bavaria was largely irrelevant; post war Bavaria is left, while Prussia is no more - of course. Even the possible re-creation of Prussia by the fusion of Berlin and Brandenburg would not change that.

The reason for this poll is actually an exhibition about the alleged Prussian envy on Bavaria currently on display in the Bavarian Embassy.

Thanks for your advice before. I ended up having contact from other friends and ordered flowers together from over there so no wire charges and bigger plants. Also my friend and her mother are coming here for the holidays now!

And they say the same - Bavaria is German Texas. (Lots of Germans in Texas for that matter. Heck, one seems able to find Germans ANYWHERE!

Frankfurt = the financial capital

Hamburg = the media capital

Duesseldorf = the business/trade capital

Berlin = the political capital

Munich = the fun capital

Munich is about as much fun as a root canal. Well, maybe if you are into beer halls; the city does have it's fans.

Berlin certainly is the capital in culture, politics and fun; the media is currently split between Hamburg and Berlin (with Hamburg holding the edge).

I'm now retired. My plan was to spend 2+ months every other year (at a minimum) in Germany after retirement. Berlin was high on my list.

So now I have rheumatoid arthritis and a slipped disk.....much walking or standing is not much fun. My memories of many German trips: I had to MOVE to see everything I might want to see.

Favorite German cities: Berlin, Marburg, Goettingen, Hamburg. I found Leipzig quite intriguing.

I would love to spend more time in Vienna; I was there only ca 10 days years ago.

At least, it's by far the biggest I've seen in my life.

For our high school's Europe (and by that I mean Austria) trip, we stayed in Munich the last night. My hotel (Hotel Präsident Hotel Präsident Schwanthalerstraße) was right smack dab in the middle of strip clubs, porno booths, and what I guess you could call "bordellos". We were strictly forbidden from being out at night after our visit to the Hofbräuhaus, but there was never an explanation why.

The strange thing is that this hotel had pictures of a few random presidents... I think I saw Ray-gun and Boosh I. I wonder, did they stay at this hotel? And if so, why? :shrug:

I don't know, gang. I have a soft spot for Bavaria, or at least Franconia, which is a lovely area and has some extremely nice people.

Also, to be fair, one does associate Bavaria with Catholicism (love those churches and Tilman Riemenschneider sculptures) and Oktoberfest, and Prussia with humorlessness and militarism. Sigh. The battle continues.

Because it is extremely common.
Nobody ever associates Prussia with Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Career, Free Mandatory Schools, Health care, no child labor, and World class Philosophy and Science.
Of course the militarism is just as true, but that was just as present in Bavaria (which always was the home of the extreme RW - unlike the "red" Prussia).

IMHO the Bavarians are unable to produce a decent Pils (despite inventing it). No argument on the Weizens, though.

The northern beer is superior as far as I am concerned. One of the nasty side-effects of the purity law, is that the Belgian/Dutch Brewing tradition has largely died out, despite it's deep roots in today's Brandenburg.

A nice little town 20km east of Wurzburg. Nice people, great beer and, of course, the "Leaning Tower of Kitzingen". :-)
