COMMENTS: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago
and our nation was the most prosperous in the world,
had absolutely no national debt, had the largest
middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise
the kids.

What the Hell happened??

MY REPLY:

Lots of falsehoods here... for example, the national debt was only paid off once, when Andrew Jackson was president in the 1830's. The current debt has been accruing since then. One Reagan plus two Bushes equals 7 trillion. We actually started paying DOWN the damn thing from 1993-2000. Oops. Your great-grandkids will still be paying the interest when they borrow money to buy a shack in 2083.

There were also prohibitively high tarriffs back then - the hot-button issue of the day, and lots of obsolete taxes not listed here.

In 1903, there were no child labor or minimum wage laws to protect workers, and I really bristle at the "mom stayed home to watch the kids" latent sexism - barefoot and pregnant anyone? PLUS, the BUSINESS CLIMATE these days makes a two-income home practically necessary for anyone who wants to breed. Why do conservatives long for the days of mom-getting-knocked-up, yet underpay their workers and run offshore accounts to enrich themselves while fucking over the workers??? They MAKE the two-income family necessary. Can't have it both ways!

Oh, let's see... gasoline taxes vary from state to state, so I question the 42 cents, which is probably the highest end. Far better to question why OIL COMPANIES are gouging us at $2.00 a gallon when the cost of a barrel is the lowest in years. Hm?

Nothing wrong with traffic fines - roads need to be paid for, and why not accrue the revenue from lawbreakers? Liquor and alcohol taxes are voluntary - no one makes you endanger your health.

Life was HELL in 1903, so I question why anyone would pine for the bad ol' days, and hey, if it weren't for FUTA and a few others, just think how many people would have been driven homeless in the past 2 years, so hurray for liberalism and the safety net! I might also add, that the telephone taxes WERE paid mostly by the telephone companies until Republican asswipes deregulated the telecommunications industry in the 90's and those greedheads passed them on to US, the consumer. As for the traffic ones, there were FEW cars in 1903, and no interstates and such. But you can bet the early roads in the US were tolled to death, and still are. So much for that theory of being new.

I think there are good and bad taxes, fair and unfair ones. But to make a blanket indictment of them? Bad logic and questionable ideology. I say we could eliminate most of the federal ones if we trimmed the Pentagon a bit more. Even in this age of Fear and Terror, the military is the biggest pork-barrel program of them all, and the civilian defense contractors are paid for with MY TAX SUBSIDIZING! I don't like welfare mothers either - CORPORATE WELFARE mothers, that is. Free market, my ass! *rolls eyes*

And just one more thing, the United States was NOT the "most prosperous country on Earth" in 1903.

I really loathe these kinds of emails - they perpetuate ignorance and aid in the blindness of the average American of their history. I bet Snopes will be debunking this one soon. But it is more fun when I do it.

Thanks for playing! ;-)

2. yes
That was what I shared - my reply to her! :-) I would have preferred to send it to ALL she sent it to, but I didn't want to clog my address book with the names of lots of wingnut friends of hers.

Then again, maybe I should have... I bet they aren't used to someone from the dark side speaking up. :D

Thanks, wryter!

3. whoever sent you this email
obviously isn't familiar with Jacob Riis' work. Otherwise they wouldn't be extolling the virtues of turn-of-the-century America.

5. Suggestion?
Block the sender for a while. Let those wing-nuts stew in their own vitrol. Besides, nothing is more frustrating to an individual than not being able to say anything.

6. well...
This is someone I have known for 8 years, and in person, never talks politics, and is mellow and pleasant - all the more frustrating. She knows I am outspoken, and I welcome any opportunity to make her think about things she may have never known. Funny thing is, her husband is quite liberal, but unconcerned with these things. Too laid back, maybe.

I don't mind your suggestion, but I can't shut out a friend. She normally sends regular "what's new in my life" emails.

I figure if she tires of my replies to these things, she can remember to remove my name from the email manually when forwarding these damn things.

9. I Have Friends And Family Too
But I've made it quite clear to them that I don't tolerate any Freeper or Fundie s**t. A one-on-one discussion about religon and politics is fine over a beer BUT it WILL be a friendly two way discussion over a beer and NOT a one sided sermon.

reply. I wonder if that list is going to make the "send to everyone in your e-mail address book" list of the right wing folks. Can I use your reply if I get one????

15. I hope they read your reply...
I'm starting to wonder if a lot of folks don't figure that their ignorance really IS bliss...

I'd like to know how many moms stayed at home to raise their kids in 1903. From what I understand the stay-at-home mom was a product of post WWII, when vets needed jobs to come home to.

Besides that, in 1903 and for several years following, those kids mom was busy raising often had to go to work by the time they were 12 years old. My grandfather, who was born in 1900, was only able to acquire an education through the 8th grade, because that was the highest level of public schooling offered in Savannah, GA at the time; and even that was only available for whites.

Some good old days...

17. Keep in mind that...
...before the Income Tax, the US was near broke. It's main income was from import tariffs.

And I agree with you. Let's get rid of those 'tax-n-spend' neocons. These clowns are wasting more money than Clinton EVER did.

18. hi Rat
Thanks for backing me up on the tarriffs. People think NAFTA was controversial? They need a history lesson.

Advance congrats on 200 posts, and good luck to Clark - I am undecided, but encouraged by his early gains on Bush in the polls.
