I got my step-dad, a die-hard Raider fan an autographed picture of Stabler for Christmas a few years back...he damned near broke down. The picture was of a game against Minnesota, I believe, that the Raiders won. Don't remember which one it was, but it was a pretty important one.

8. bradshaw/swann. the montana/rice voters must be too young to see straight

montana/rice was certainly a nice combo, but much of their magic had to do with the fact that they were NOT the greatest combo ever. they failed to connect enough to make it dramatic, yet always seemed to pull it out in the clutches. this made for wonderful games from a spectator point of view, highly dramatic. but less than ideal from a coach's standpoint.

bradshaw/swann had it where others lacked it, and that combo worked largely due to sheer improvisation and athleticism on bradshaw's part and swann's superglue grip and an ability to really take the hit on the way down and hold on to the ball.

Both Bradshaw and Swann were great players, but they weren't central to their team's success. The Steelers won because of their great defense and running game. While the occasional (and very well timed) pass was necessary, I wouldn't go so far as to call Bradshaw-Swann the greatest QB-WR combo ever.

montana/rice had the benefit of an entire team geared toward the pass. montana often had all the time in the world to find the open man. bradshaw, on the other hand, often found swann on broken plays.
