I can't freaking get The Sims 2 to install...

My computer keeps overheating and turning off while I'm trying to install. UGH!!

1. Get a better CPU fan.

50CFM or better would do the trick. Avoid aluminium/copper hybrids, get a good copper cooler with solid struts that screw into the mobo or at least has a 3 prong grasp.

All the objects and the environments were 2D. The Sims themselves were the only true 3D part of the game, and they were pretty sparsely constructed at that.

but it's worth the trouble. :)

Have you tried shutting down everything that isn't necessary to have running while playing the game, like virus protection, firewall and other utilities that may be running in the background? Hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up the task manager and you can shut down anything that's not needed.

This site lists all the usual programs that run in the background, so you can get an idea of what you can and can't shut down.

Do you have enough RAM? Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements for the game. The Sims 2 web site offers some installation and troubleshooting tips in the help section.
